What a question! This is the age old question that cannot be answer by cut/paste from dictionary.com. People have asked it for centuries, and people have used every medium possible to try to answer it.
The reason it is impossible to answer is because 'love' is a word created to describe a particular feeling, emotion, or desire. We as people then turn and try to give a definition of 'love' using as many descriptive passages as possible to describe the feelings, emotions, and desires of love and all we are left to do is recreate the word love.
All that being said, my descriptive passage to love is:
Love is that inner most, empty, gut-wrenching void, everything that apathy can describe, everything that is, is gone, the place that nothingness begins and ends, FILLED, overflowing with peace, joy, and deliverence from all that is empty and missing, without space to insert a breath, without time it lasts always. That is love.

Love is a heart felt emotion. Felt and given to another form of life. Rather of human form or your best adored pet.
Love is NOT a reciprocal emotion. And there are degrees and levels of love. Love of a child, love of a parent, love of a mate or friend.
All offer us different levels and types of emotion and personal fulfillment.
If I had to define LOVE? I would say that it is a feeling we get when we are in the company of something or some one that pleases us.
Love is simply how we associate emotion.

Love is the choice to sacrifice for somebody regardless of the cost to you and without any thought of personal benefit--it's when you decide you care about somebody enough to help them in their need, no matter what the cost to you.
