Jesus' last words

The Bible cannot be taken word for word because each book of the Bible was written by a different person. It's not like one person wrote the whole Bible and is constantly contradicting his or herself.

Think of it as like when someone tells a story and then the story gets changed around when another person tells it. When you combine all the stories together, you can kind of get the whole picture. Even history books don't tell the same story as other history books. Real people wrote the books of the Bible, not God.

Oh, and for JOH 10:30 "I and my Father are one," think of it as God is water and Jesus is ice. To complete the Trinity, the Holy Spirit can be thought of as vapor.

God is water (liquid), Jesus is ice (solid), and the Holy Spirit is vapor.

People who deny that there are contradictions just do not know that different people wrote the Bible and had different points of view. That's how life is.

As for those people who try to look for all the wrong in the Bible, just stop. Look at the Bible as a tool to learn morals and how to live life as a good person. The United States of America was born on these morals. We are probably one of the "happiest" countries in the world because of the roots that grew out of Christianity. As this country is getting older, people are forgetting its roots. It's sad. And I can't believe someone was trying to start up another lawsuit against our government to try to get the words "In God we trust" off of our currency. It's a disgrace to our country.

Christians (and religious people in general) interpret life through their religious worldview. A typical Bible-is-inerrant Christian was usually either
a) taught to be Christian from a very early age
b) had a really bad life or emotional event and was able to turn it around / make it better by embracing religion.

If it's the former, that Christian does not have the capability of doubting their beliefs, because they don't see them as beliefs to begin with. It's how they interpret the world. The indoctrinated Christian's beliefs are not one among many -- they are the context in which all other beliefs and knowledge are interpreted.

Therefore, when presented with a piece of evidence that contradicts their worldview, they have two choices:
1) abandon their worldview
2) assume that the contradiction does not exist for some unknown reason (out of context, bad translation, lying heretic, etc...)

Choice 1 is very hard for anyone to do, so most go with Choice 2. They'll say the quote is taken out of context, but won't usually take the time to actually investigate if that's true.

For the other Christian who's religion is based on emotionally-important events, their faith is tied to powerful feelings of good, and to doubt it (to them) is to risk returning to the previous state of their lives in which this good does not exist. This fear is more than enough to push any doubts out of their mind.

It should be noted that this critique applies to all beliefs based on emotion rather than facts -- including die-hard atheists who are atheists because (for example) they hate their Christian parents.

In reality, belief in a supernatural power is done because people want to feel supernatural. I think it's funny that belief in god is rewarded with god-like immortality -- it says something about why we believe.

because the bible is supposed to be THE word of god, and questioning that would make them question more things about their religion. that might lead to a complete change of thought in regards to the bible and then they wouldn't be unquestionably faithful to the religion.

you could say that since the bible was actually written by many different men over a period of hundreds of years, that some things got messed up. but then you hav eto ask yourself who to believe. do you listen to what matthew wrote were jc's last words, or luke's? and some people just don't have the ability to wonder such things, so they take every word as the right thing, even if it's hypocritical to what a previous book said.
