With my old laptop, i could just rename the file ( Eg, sniper.wmv i could merely delete the .wmv file extension and type in sniper.mpeg) but with this new laptop, i can only change the name of the file, NOT the file extension. Where can i go to remedy this?

Thanks!

Open up a folder and go to the Tools bar, then select folder options.
Under the View Tab you will be able to check or uncheck an option with: "Hide extensions for known file types" Uncheck this and then you will be able to change it all.

changing the extension does not change the file type, an mpg is stil an mpg even with the wmv extension. There's no point in changing the extension. Software does not try to determine the file's type anymore, due to the fact that there are so many formats now. All you old laptop was doing was reading the file and determining the type to figure what type of decoding to use. That no longer exists. To change the file type you need to convert the file.

Hi!
You can open Control panel(in start or start/settings)
then chose Folder Options then chose tab View and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" in advanced settings.
But note that you can rename the file extension but you can't modify file type(file code).you should find some software for that.

- Open windows explorer (Windows+E or simply click on my computer)
- Click Tools --> Folder Options
- under "View" tab, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

you can now change file extension.

Warning: change .wmv to .mpeg is not a solution to view .wmv file correctly, you should use 3rd party to convert video file. Don't anyhow change file extension unless you're sure what you're doing.

Let me know if you need more help on the video conversion part.

Just rename the file . To do so , try one of these

1> go to dos prompt & give ren command
2> just change settings of your Window/Mac system to mention the full name of file , i. e. with exetention & now rename the file !!

But , i m not sure that the file will be able to run in new format .

there are many softwares on web which converts ...... some particular exetensions in to others . Try Them !!

it is because you did not enable the file extension to visible

open a folder window
tools -> folder options...

then go in the view tab
and uncheck the box "Hide extension for known file types"
