(Edited version of previous answer to a related question)

Who knows but YHVH? Many more qualified than I have wrestled with this question and many more who have experienced the anguish of losing a child prior to delivery have wrestled with even more fervency and the need to know. To those parents my heart goes out. Since you asked, I offer my humble opinion, though I stress it is only an opinion and not a writ from God. John 3 states: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh", in other words, not spiritual in any sense, but rather earthly, fleshly, as is our natural birth from our mothers‘ womb; but "that which is born from above by the spirit is spiritual," heavenly, Godly. It is speaking of the need for the new birth of the Spirit. The verse does not prove, but perhaps suggest, by process of elimination, that those infants who died before passing through the portal of life of the mothers womb do not need the new birth to enter into heaven, having not been stained with the life of Adam. That they are granted immediate and free access into heaven is not stated either, but that they at least need not the new birth which was made available to all men by the death, burial and resurrection of the Messiah. If it is needed, then perhaps it is made available to them upon entry into the portals of heaven. Some theologians believe it is the first breath of air that produces the soul, the combination of spirit and body, while others argue that it is not the case. It is the soul that sins, which requires the shedding of blood to cover. I don’t know, but have tried to apply what I do know and feel. I doubt that YHVH would punish a little one for not having even the opportunity at life. Above all He is Gracious, Merciful. Loving and Just, contrary to reports you may have heard.

To continue my lost train of thought, one could successfully argue from this same line of reasoning that angels, demons, extraterrestrial beings or other created beings not born of the womb of woman cannot be candidates for the new spiritual birth either, which makes sense and supports my thesis. Of course, not all those born of woman will enter the Kingdom of God, but only those born anew by the Spirit. In other words, you need both. Lastly, had Christ not entered into the world fulfilling both these requirements He would not have been qualified to be the Savior of men. He was born of woman, thru the birth waters of Mary, but also from above with the Spirit being His parent in the impregnating of the young virgin maid. Hope this helps.

According to Islam, any child that dies before a certain age is sinless and, as a result, goes automatically to Heaven. Hence the reason not to really despair if a kid dies when just a baby.

No, they were never baptised so your evil torturer God will torment their souls for all Eternity. Ever consider finding a nice, loving religion? Being afraid of a psycho torturer is not a real religion, honey. There are many different gods, you can find another one if you try. Isnt He supposed to destroy the world, killing everyone, and torture most of the planet? What kind of God do you worship? Sounds like a Death Cult to me....

Were the babies chosen by God to be saved?

We do not know His plan so therefore we do not know. I sure hope they do though.

Depends, I think different religions believe different things. Catholics believe that they go to a place called Limbo.
