We could use the GPA criteria for people who come to study in the U.S.

The person who mentioned how hard it is for people who legally apply for green cards, got my point. I know honest, smart, hardworking people who follow the rules, pay their taxes, have health insurance, advance education degrees, and yet wouldn't be included on the recent immigration reform, only illegal immigrant would.

U.S. should consider making immigration laws easier for everyone who applies for it legally. The Govt. is ready to legalise illegal immigrants but legal people who pay their taxes regularly have to wait for years together in the immigration line to get a Green card.

It is not about smart people, it is about poor people, particularly when you remember that a green card and naturalized citizenship bring with them the ability to bring in family including indigent parents, at a time when we can't fund the baby boomer retirement.

Poor people take out more from the system then they put in, and it usually stays that way for more than a generation for poor immigrants. That is why all developed countries that subsidize services like education and healthcare limit the number of poor immigrants that can come. That is why the line to come here is so long.

However, generally I agree with where you are coming from. We have to decide how many immigrants we need and can support without damaging services to our own people. Then we need to decide what kind of immigrants we want and make it easier for that type of immigrant to come over.

In México there are very intelligent and very capable people. I think that the Mexican and American governments should work a better agreement for immigration. The best the American government could do to stop illigal immigration would be to make it legal; in that way they could make interviews to the people who would like to go and work there, in this way they could make shure that the people who is emigrating is decent and that can work in a good way. Let's face it, the United States need people to work the factories, so why wouldn't be good to get the most capable people from México, instead of receiving not decent people that is iligally crossing the border every day.

It actually does - if you are smart enough to have a set amount of money used to set up a legitimate US based business, a certain number is allowed to immigrate.

If you are smart enough to hold an advanced degree, you can obtain a H1-B visa. Temporary (6 years) - but a start.

Absolutely NOT!!!!That would be discrimination.I am Canadian and am currently in the process of immigrating into the U.S.. I consider myself well educated but who is to say how smart I am? Certainly not the government.

Who determines what "smart" is? That sounds a little scary to me. I mean sure it would be great to fill our country with intelligent minds, but where would that end...what if next the government decided to ship off all of the people who aren't so smart?

Thats pretty tough. What would you use as the qualifier - education, IQ test, Tests? This would be a slippery slope as it could lead to other qualifiers which are not based on objective reasons for instance race, height, weight. So no, it should be based on some objective aspect.

If they're that smart, why would they need easier immigration laws? The immigration laws as they are are fine ... just a pity they're not followed ....
