Because it is REALLY HOT in the tropics in the summer, it is full of bugs and snakes and predators (especially on the young), so it is a better survival strategy for many species to fly to a temperate climate for breeding and chick-rearing and then fly back when the temperate paradise starts getting chilly.

It is too hot, but some have changed their living patterns. Take the Canada Goose. This pretty pest used to fly down and go back. Now, these geese are making many parts of the USA their permanent homes, changing the ecosystem here for the worse. Their droppings are actually polluting water systems and creating a terrible problem everywhere. However, you'd best not touch them because they are protected class of bird. You will be in trouble for harming one feather on this fiend's head. I like Canadians very much, but this is one Canadian I'd like to see go back to Canada!!!

Fly south? Why, here they fly north! You see I'm in the southern Hemisphere!

They usually need mild weather to mate, breed and rear young. They get this by following the sun.
