It's a bad habit. My X husband did it for years. Then one day I told him that I was at work and saw a supervisor reprimanding a worker. While he was doing it he was gnawing on his nails. I said it looked so unprofessional and nasty. He stopped. For good.

Have you ever noticed someone biting the inner lining of their cheeks? Sometimes they even hold their hand up to the cheek to really get at the lining of the cheek (i.e. cheek-bite keratosis). Well, chewing of the fingers, picking of the skin, biting of the nails, are all a potential form of an impulse control disorder. It doesn't appear that he is doing it to harm himself. Nor, does he appear to be doing it consciously. We all have our quirks when we are tense, nervous, or upset. He appears to bite his fingers until they swell. Me, I used to bite the inside lining of my cheeks. However, after preparing a poster presentation on psychogenic excoriation, cheek bite keratosis, and nail biting, I kept a daily thought record and tried to conciously think about when I was doing it. I found that I did it most when I was upset, working to meet a deadline, or nervous about something. Therefore, if you are at a comfortable level with your coworker, you could suggest that he keep a daily thought record of when he bites his fingers, and what emotions he experienced when attempting to stop. Also, maybe you two could make an agreement that when you notice him biting, to call him on it. Or, perhaps he could chew gum. Or, perhaps he can keep biting his fingers and now you just have a greater understanding of the underlying meaning of his biting behavior. Could be worse! He could fart all day!

Men tend to be nail-biters more often than women, and the cause could be emotional stress, habit, or psychiatric problem. For more complete info and addtl links, go to :
