Due to a heart condition and medication I was on in middle school, I wasn't as active as I had wished to be. Now that I've had heart surgery and am off medication, I really want to work on my endurance (which is pretty bad...i do a 12 minute mile on a GOOD day...) . How should I go about improving this? How often, how long, etc. should I run, and for what distance? How much should I increase it every day? I'm open to ANY suggestions!

Do a web search for the program called "from couch potato to 5K". It is a 9 week program, it is really good. It alternates walking with short spurts of jogging, slowly building up the jogging time. It tells you each week exactly what you need to do.

Check with your doctor. He/she knows your medical history and will give the the best advice for exercise and endurance training.

You should run until you feel very exhausted. If your heart is acting funny, you should stop. If it worsens call your doctor.
