I never quote the Bible word for word. I have enough faith that I know what I am talking about and don't have to do that. You are punishing all religions and preachers for the sins of a couple of the Catholic churchs. No, I am not saying the Catholics sin, I am saying those are the priest you always hear about molesting children. That doesn't always happen. Look at all the teachers that have sex with their students- do you keep your kids out of school?
Another thing- you can't base all religion on J. Witness' either. I had a friend that was one of those and her beliefs were completely different than mine. You can't base your decision based on two things you know from two religions. You need more facts about other religions and then choose if you want to believe.
I am not in any way downing Catholic or J. Witness' so please don't anyone get offended. I am just trying to make a point that he can't judge everyone or ever religion because of two experiences.

Well, if you ask a question about the Bible (or the God that is described in the Bible), then people who believe in it will naturally use it to answer the question. Unfortunately, they often simply quote a verse without adding their own commentary, and I wish they would add some of their own words. I want to see the thought process behind the answer, not just the answer...kind of like when one is in math class, and the teacher says, "Don't just give the answer, SHOW me how you got it!" Anyone can quote a verse that their pastor taught them--it takes a little more reasoning and ingenuity to analyze the verse and explain why one thinks it's relevant to the question.
" i have a father who is a jehovas witness and challenge him on his bible, and every time i leave him and his wife stooped."
This made me giggle. ^_^ I think JWs are probably the least knowledgable about the Bible. They're really good at quoting reams of scriptures, but not so good at dealing with contradictions and errors within them.

Well the Bible is the final authority. But anyone who really has a relationship with Jesus Christ should be able to speak to you about "issues" without ALWAYS quoting from the Bible. As for the "priests" & the preachers of the cults...well that is a whole nuther can o worms. Many people CALL themselves "Christians" & some even actually go to church. But like the old saying goes...just because you stand in the garage & call yourself a car...does NOT mean that you are a car!! Just remember that alot of people are just trying to give you the "best" answer they can, therefore they are using the final authoritive in the conversation, which is the Holy Scriptures.

I dont know, being agnostic myself, its hard for me to see it from their side, but id say one of two things 1. Theyre either not intellectual enough to think of an answer on their own, so they turn to something they read in the bible or heard in church, even though it my be irrelevent to what the conversation is about (because quoting scripture, however irrelevant, makes you sound smart). Even though these arent there opinions, they just assume that what they read and hear is correct instead of questioning and finding out more facts, and then coming to an answer. Secondly, there are also christians out there who use the bible along with their own morality and beliefs to form their overall beliefs by infusing the two. Personally, how do i know that the bible isnt just a harry potter story book from 2000 some odd years ago? Questioning things is the only true way to find an answer, deuce holla

Many people feel this way .However we should respect each others believes . Once someone explained to me , If you ask why and I answer , then you ask why , and continue , no matter what I say you will ask and question with a question , no answer will be good enough . If you believe then you don't question , for you know . The souls aren't all heaven or hell bond . There are lost souls .And many bibles and many religions , find God and your at peace . It is very interesting to learn many and all you can find about others .But to me there is only one God . The lost soles are the priest or preachers , ect.,." Holy spearkers that gave in to the demon and tring to reach back to God . Keep your heart open and soul clean .And yes , we are only human, and can not have all the answers.

There have been many times when an idea has been cited as being in the Bible, and it is discovered later that the idea has been taken out of context. Example: "Money is the root of all evil" The context of that verse is "The love of money is the root of all evil". Having a chapter/verse can be helpful to the reader.
May I humbly suggest that your reasons for not being a part of a congregation are not the same ones that you would apply to other areas of your life. Example: I don't use money, because it might be counterfeit and used by drug dealers. I don't vote, because all politicians are corrupt and democracy should be free. I don't read because of all the trash that is written, and the bias that is promulgated by both political parties. etc.

Because as Christians, we believe the bible is the word of God, and therefore is infallible. This, however can be abused, when people take parts of the bible out of context. In fact, this can happen with any book, especially religious books, and is why the bible, (or quran or any other book) needs to be read and quoted with much care. You don't necesarrily need to change the wording of something for it to mean something different - just take little bits from different places, and put them together.
Yes, the bible is probably over quoted, but it's all in good intention - people are trying to provide good solid truth. The fact is that as humans, we need to be allowed to make some mistakes...

As Christian, it is understood, that the Holy Scriptures have been preserved for us so that we can receive the necessary counsel and instruction to guide us from the one who created us Jehovah God.It is only natural that spiritual questions be answered using God's Word.If you were asked on question on fishing, you wouldn't answer the question from a publication on knitting, would you?
Reading and studying the Bible does not mean you have to expose yourself or your children to false religion.Having a parent who is a Witness, you should know Christendom is corrupt and full of hypocrisy. Why don't you study the Bible? You would at least learn what a soul is and that the heart cannot be trusted(Jer.17:9).
You mention challenging your father on 'his' bible. You don't realise your father is aware of Jehovah's counsel found at 2Tim.2:23"Further,turn down, foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing they produce fights"
How else do you quote from a publication or anything else for that matter if it is not word for word.It isn't a quote otherwise.Answering word for word from the Bible does not imply that the writer is unaware of what he/she is quoting. On the contrary it shows great faith in God,to soley use His Holy Word to answer questions.
Adam and Eve found the answer for themselves, without applying Gods counsel and where did it get them and us for that matter? One of the many reasons why this system is in such a mess is because people have turned away from God.They dont open their Bibles. They dont listen to Gods counsel and advice. They choose to follow their hearts and make their own decisions.Way to go!

we do have faith and belief and that's why we use the bible to back up our answer. If someone believes in God and what He says then they will look at what He says. I don't get why you think that's a bad thing..Not everyone quotes the bible word for word, but most do so others know Gods word and not their own

Cause you should really help other by proving that it was written. You want this blind faith and maybe you have heard all that you believe and never taken the time to read just for yourself. As for me I just needed to find out if the Messiah had been from the beginning and I found that he was created just because I took time to search and it, it took me years. I have learn so much in my research and it took me to places I would never known if I never read it, it also say in the Bible that people are mislead because they don't study. There is only one way to salvation an everyone must qualified being to your own standard will cause you to fail. The Bible also say in Proverbs say don't trust your heart . But to each their own May Yahweh bless your understanding.
