Depends on what you are looking for. Nothing beats the city if you want an urban experience, and there are lots of different suburbs, many with their own feel. Do you want to be around rich people who drive BMWs and send their kids to private schools? Do you want to be around young hipsters? Middle class families dedicated to making public schools work? (Do you have kids?) Do you want to be in a diverse neighborhood or in a neighborhood that is mostly Asian, Latino, or African American or nonHispanic white? There are so many choices that it would be helpful if you gave more information about what you are looking for. Pretty much all of the Bay Area is expensive, but so is San Diego, isn't it?

Oakland sometimes gets a bad rap in the media, but there are actually some pretty nice - and affordable - neighborhoods here. I live on the Grand Lake/Piedmont border near Lake Merritt & am very happy & love where I live (it's right across the Bay Bridge and you can actually find parking here!).
I'd recommend checking out Craigslist if you're looking to rent.
