Gabriel is throughout the New Testament the angel of the Incarnation and of Consolation, and so in Christian tradition Gabriel is ever the angel of mercy while Michael is rather the angel of judgment. At the same time, even in the Bible, Gabriel is, in accordance with his name, the angel of the Power of God, and it is worth while noting the frequency with which such words as "great", "might", "power", and "strength" occur in the passages that refere to him. The Jews indeed seem to have dwelt particularly upon this feature in Gabriel's character, and he is regarded by them as the angel of judgment, while Michael is called the angel of mercy. Thus they attribute to Gabriel the destruction of Sodom and of the host of Sennacherib, though they also regard him as the angel who buried Moses, and as the man deputed to mark the figure Tau on the foreheads of the elect (Ezekiel 4).

Angel means messenger so therefore Gabriel being an Angel of God, He would be a messenger of God. The word Arch is a matter of Rank so to speak. Jesus and Lucifer, by some were considered the covering angles over Gods thrown (see the Ark of the Covenant, covering cherubs) when Lucifer rebelled and became Satan Gabriel was next in line to take the job. He's got a very cool job if you think about it. He's the one that talks to several people in the bible announcing great things. Daniel, John the Baptist's father, Joseph, Mary...
Jesus will return with the shout of the arch angel. It is His voice we will her calling His loyal followers up out of their graves and then those who are alive and remain. He is the top messenger of God.
Let me be very clear that this does not make Jesus a created being. Anyone who represents God may be considered a messenger or even a prophet which would be somewhat equivalent to an ambassador.

One of the answers said the Bible only mentions Gabriel once, and suggests he himself is a Christian? The Old Testament records Gabriel much more than that - the Book of Daniel for example came to Daniel to show him things to come.

Non the less - Gabriel is a commander of legions of angels. Arch is a rank and Angel means "messenger" - not just any messenger but one appointed from God and "angel" is not ever associated with a human being.

Gabriel is not an archangle because the Bible never said that he was. There are only two verses in the Bible that mention archangel (1 Thessalonians 4:16 and Jude 1:9).
