Holy cow people it's just hair! It will grow back. She's 3 not 13... I completely understand why you would go to such an "extreme". When I was 12 I got head lice so bad, we could not get rid of it. I had really beautiful, long thick hair... after 6 treatments, my hair was stripped, dry and horrible looking & still I still had eggs that we couldn't get rid of! We cut off all of my hair, it was so short. I cried, but I got over it- I still have great hair & there was no permanent damage (to my hair or my psyche).
And as for the person who said they would report you to social services, they are an idiot... Lice has nothing to do w/ how clean you or how much you wash or anything... she probably caught from another little kid in play group or at the play ground or something. You can get it anywhere.
Just ignore your family and don't worry so much, you did what you thought was best to take care of your family. Way to go mom.

I did the same thing to my daughters when they were 3 and 4. Their hair was so thick that I could NOT comb out everything. They had head lice for so long I didn't think we would ever get of it. Finally, fed up, I shaved their heads. I refused to try to put more poison on their heads to try to get rid of the lice. That stuff is not good for them if you use it every week for months. We have never had head lice problem again since that time. They are 10 and 11 now. I think you absolutely did the right thing.

I uderstand that you took the only course of action that you could think of. If a child could sit still for having a head shaved then family would be very puzzled as to how treatment was not able to be effectively given. What's wrong is that the lice may now move to her body depending on where they are coming from. All parents need help at some time please see if someone locally will help you with this challenge.

I don't think any of us can say whether it's right or wrong... a little extreme, though at the age of three at least it shouldn't cause her any permanent psychological damage. But don' t be surprised when it comes back, unless you've treated everyone else in the house. You also need to bag all of her stuffed animals for at least 10 days ( or throw them away), thoroughly wash all bedding and clothes, hats, etc...treat the house and vacuum it well. And guess what? Do it ALL over again in 7-10 days. Applying baby oil to her scalp will help prevent the lice from reattaching. If this continues to be a problem, you need to ask your pediatrician for a prescription and for other tips on how to de-louse your house.

Well, that was a bit extreme, but it is frustrating when they are that young. Have you sprayed the bedding and all the furniture in the house? The car seats? The carpet and the curtains! Those things are pests and hard as all get out to get rid of. There is something at the drugstores to spray on their heads to deter lice, check into it, so you can use it as her hair grows out, so you don't end up with the same problem again!

There is medicine to get rid of it. If you try, you don't have to shave your daughter head. But I suppose as a last resort, if you are could not do it any other way, then maybe you had to. But it was a shame.
I would have been really mad. There is over the counter medicine. Head lice is a sign if a dirty mother!

Yes.That's so sad.I am a mom of 4 kids, which who have caught head lice before. We fought it for a year almost, at one time.I know as a mom, we feel at our wits end, but shaving her head was NOT the answer.IF it had been a boy, I could understand that, because boys shave their heads, but a girl??CMON!!You have made that child feel terrible and I am sure kids are picking on her terrible!I understand why your family is mad.Why didn't you keep trying. There are sooooo many ways to try and get rid of head lice and I KNOW that it is hard to get rid of, but you shouldn't have went that far.

There is certain medicines/ shampoos made to destroy lice and also many physicians have specific treatments to take care of this problem.
While your approach was somewhat extreme, your motives were to keep your children safe, and that's a good thing.
If they are calling you idiot, why didn't they call you with help to your problem?
The hair on your children's heads will regrow, and hopefully the lice won't return.

Please be sure to wash all her bedding even pillows and vacuum your house and bedrooms. Was her clothes. Getting rid of lice is hard work but that's a mom's job. If you see it again use the lice shampoo and cut the hair short then pull out any nits you see from each strand. Also treat her hair brushes and combs with the lice spray .
