my son is three also, and we get bored sometimes too. the best thing to do is pretend play! Dakota loves pretending to be a dinosaur, pirate, monsters, puppies, etc. but don't just watch him get down on all fours and chase him while barking. put scarfs around your head and grab a sword and start dueling. use crazy things around the house and be scary monsters and chase after each other.( as long as he isn't scared of monsters, mine loves them) Read a book and then try to act out each page. also try and pick up a stuffed animal and give it a voice. sit behind the couch or table and put on a puppet show. have your son sit in front and ACT SILLY!
My son loves pretend play, he just eats it up, and as a bonus time will fly by.

Oh so many possibilities.
-get involved in a project; he will want to help out. Make every little thing seem big and important (Oh, this is so big...how can i lift it? Wow, I just can't decide where to keep this. Do you have any ideas? What in the world is this? what can we use it for?)
-read stories. Go to the library to make it extra fun.
-tell stories. Get animated with different voices and huge movements. Really use your facial expressions and use varying levels of loudness in your voice.
-Make up stories. Look at a magazine and make up stories to pictures you find. Go to a park (in better weather), store, airport, etc. and people watch. Make up stories about the people you see. Have fun with it. Get ridiculous.
-Cook something. I've found that if my daughter helps me make dinner, she's more likely to eat it & like it.
-Make projects with discarded items around the house and glue, paper, markers, cans, whatever you can find.
-Take a walk (if not a thunderstorm). It's a nice opportunity to use slickers, galoshes, an umbrella--great fun for a young child. Also a great opportunity to talk with your child and send a message of how important (s)he is. One-on-one time!
-Go on a treasure hunt (inside or outside). Make a list of things to find. You can even have the child help make the list if you cut pictures of the items out of old magazines and ad flyers.
You can find lots of books with craft, rainy-day, tv free, and other themes at yard sales, stores, on-line auctions, and you can find ideas on line on numerous sites.
Have fun finding something you like!!

I'm an ece student and I have all the neat little things I've made for assignments and for future use.
For the next rain day, you'll have these thing ready to go, I have used them on my youngest daughter and my nephew, currently both 6, but worked when they were younger too.
build yourself a giant board game, out of bristol board, shutes and ladders is the easiest for kids to play or candyland, need lots of room for this however.
Get some felt from wal-mart, pick a few nursery rhymes and make characters to fit the rhymes, felt board stories, cover the side of an old box with felt to make the felt board.
I have the book Mortimer by Robert Munch, and made shakers to go with it, they loved those, shake the shakers when you say 'Bang, bang, rattle bim bang', just be ready to read the book a few more times.
finger puppets for finger stories are fun to.
go to ...............................for more ideas, songs, rhymes, stories etc.

I did something with my kids the other day when it was raining, they keep asking to do it again. It benefited them and me as well. They put their bathing suits on and I spayed the floor with soapy water and they took towels and slid all over it. They had a blast- like a little slip and slide indoors!!! And then I put them in the bath. The best thing is my floors are extremely clean now! Try it out it is soooo much fun!!! :-)

there are so many things you can do with your son....aside from all the normal games you play, how about allowing him to sit on your lap while you go to www.sesamestreet.com or a website like that and help him with the kiddie activities or print them out....
you can play WOLF as in you're the wolf about to eat him....it'll get him excited and running around....also fun for you...and when you catch him, tickle him and then let him go.....
ohh...and since its raining....you can play ADVENTURE....like you're on a ship and everytime thunder comes it means there's troubles....like pirates are screaming to get you guys...then you guys have to hide and make pretend weapons....or something along those lines
or you can play camping....go under the covers and tell stories or pretend to have a campfire....
turn on his favorite music and start dancing together.....
piggy-back rides....
reading books....
sing songs like ITSY BITSY SPIDER
hope this helps!

Read a childrens book but make it exciting by using different voices. Oh what I do with my nieces is make them practice their numbers and alaphabet but I do it as a game. Clean the house! Ok I know this sounds dull but have your little one pick things up and throw them away and such. It'll keep the little one up and occupied!

Gets some paper and crayons and draw pictures. Thats always a good one. Or you could always go around the house and have him help you pick up toys.

Well, when my son was that age, he had a giant floor puzzle with the alphabet and pictures on it, we start putting it together and when it was finished, his favorite thing was to sit on it and I would ask him what the pictures were.
