As opposed to a wave over or simply asking.
Specificly, is this action rude when a younger person does it to an older person? (e.g.- son-in-law to mother-in-law)

And also what about whistling or snapping to get someone's attention?

Thank you for your answers- I was actually very surprised to see that everyone agrees with me in finding these behaviors very rude also.
However, one time, my husband crooked his finger at my mother and she and I both found it extremely rude to the point of insult. But when I talked to him about it later, he stated that he did not consider it rude, and it is not considered rude in American culture. (I grew up American, first-generation of Egyptian-born and bred parents).

yes. definitely. and don't do it in china, it's an obscene gesture. only people of higher position can do that to a person of lower position.

and whistling and snapping could be seen as snooty, or snobby, so, i guess it would be rude.

Crooked A Finger

It depends on the culture, and on the people of course.

In American culture almost none of these things would be considered rude (although the snapping comes close for me). However, in Mexico, I would never use my hand to wave someone to me with the fingers pointing up, only down, because that's rude there. The fingers-up wave is used to call animals, not people.

Yes, very rude for a younder person to crook, whistle, or snap their fingers for attention. It's not rude for an adult to do it to a child, or someone "high up" (like a boss, teacher, etc) to do it to a lesser, but it's not tasteful when done seriously between adults.

I am not a dog, so do not whistle or snap your fingers at me.

I find the hand wave works better, as it is a larger, hard-to-miss gesture

usually considered rude...it all depends on who it is and the situation...the crook finger usually implies anger and punishment, sometimes a secret...from a son-in-law to a mother-in-law...i would call it kind of rude...but again it depends on the situation and intention of the person doing it...

I think it's more rude if you have a bad expression on your face. And clapping or snapping definitely is rude.

To be safe, it's just best to stand up and slap your thigh with your palm two or three times really fast.
