I recently moved from the country to a very busy part of the city and I'm getting more and more irritated by the use of slang words in everyday speech... Half of the time I can't even understand what my co-workers are saying.

That is so funny! I moved from the busy city (N.Y.C.) to a comparatively rural area and I think they use too much slang here!
And, oh yes, it does irritate me, like nails on a chalkboard.
To me, it's worse than slang- it's just poor grammar, almost pigeon (American) English. What's more is that these people don't even REALIZE they're not speaking properly!!
You don't need to chill out like someone else suggested. This habit of Americans everywhere is just another bad reflection of how much our government prioritizes our education.

Yeah that can be really annoying especially when you are in a work situation. But slang is all around us its kinda of hard to get around when someone is talking to you and they are using a lot of slang after they are done talking think about what they said and try to proccess it in your own mind so it makes it easy for you to understand.

It depends I get tired of hearing disrespectful slang from teenagers. Some slang I actually think is funny but it does get irritating.

Yeah, I do agree with you that slang does get irritating, especially when you're around folks who use it and you don't understand a word of it. I also hate the fact that I use it at times. *shakes head*

Well for sure the hip-hop rappers hope that slang never goes out of style as they laugh all the way to the Jewelry store.

Slang is lazy and sloppy, but not no much so as the secret little computer abbreviations, icons, and cutsie sayings that only make sense to a retarded 13 year old (apologies in advance to retarded 13 year old-I see many of you apparently answering on these boards).

Yes it does, I always correct grammar without thinking. Unlike in English when the teacher drills the correct way to write, people don't realize it applies to vocal communication as well as written. In reality, people pick up slang just from hearing it, without realizing what they do;
or
the problem is of course society (heeheehee).

I understand slang. People make slang so other people won't understand what you're saying.

THANK YOU!!! Yes!
It depends on the slang, however; the city "ghetto" trash really has got to go!
