We have a bichon frise and he is the most adorable little guy ever. He would never think of biting anybody, let alone a child and he is the best thing I ever did for my family.

Under 6 pounds is a special problem, but I would say a miniature Dotson, winner dog. I have a Bichon Frise and I love the breed and will never have another kind now. They get about 15 lbs. Good Luck

I personally think that the bigger the dog the more family friendly they are. We always had labs when I was growing up and they were the best. Also, I don't know that there are many breeds under 6 pounds. The only dog that I can think of that may work for you is a yorkshire terrier.

Hi,
I have a Shih Tzu and it's the BEST dog I've ever had. They are so easy going. I can pet her as she eats and she wags her tail or open her mouth while she has food in it and take it out without her snapping or being aggressive.
While I don't suggest taking food from a dog's mouth while they eat, I've had to do that if she gets something she isn't supposed to. A guest once gave her a rib bone thinking I would be okay with it and I had to take it from her. I've had other dogs that once they had a treat like that, I could forget trying to get it back for fear of losing a digit.
Good luck!

A dog under 6 pounds is not a good dog for children. They play too rough with the little thing. They accidentally sit or step on it. That could be deadly for one 6 lbs or less. My dog is small. She weighs 9 lbs. A woman gave her to me because her children were too rough with it. It was terrified of them and hid alot.A small dog is easily hurt. She said she either had to give up the dog or her kids. Luckily I got the ShihTzu. You will have to judge if your kids and nerves are up to a small dog. Maybe one a little bigger.

For a family I recommend a toy rat terrier. They dont have the issues like some small dogs. They dont break their leg if they fall off a bed or even jump off something like yorkies do. I know a yorkie breeder and one of her dogs has broken two of her legs just from a short fall. They also have short hair so you dont have to take them to the groomer. You can play rough with them and they love it. Perfect for kids.

Well, I have a Yorkie and I LOVE her. She is the best and she loves kids. She is a lot of fun and keeps everyone entertained, but she is also sweet and will sit with you on the couch when you just want to hang out.
I would also say a Bichon. They are very loyal and loving, and they are also great with children. I have a couple of friends that have them and they have been great for both of the families.

There are no good "family dogs" that small. Tiny dogs are fragile, hard to housebreak and often nasty with children. Consider changing your criteria! A Papillon might be best if your children are VERY gentle.
