Kill them on a cool night or before dawn when it is coldest. They are least active at that time and will all be in the nest. You should be able to find an aerosol or at the home supply and hardware stores specifically for wasps. Don't dispose of the paper hive during a hot time of the day because there is no guarantee that they will all be dead.

Evening, just before dark is when they all come to the nest/hive for the night. They are active during the day, but stay at the nest/hive at night. If it is a wasp nest that is hanging on something, there is a spray can of stuff you can get at about any store (like wal-mart, kmart, or garden center) and it will say, wasp and hornet spray on the can. It shoots stream of stuff that will kill them and also soak the nest/hive. Be sure to use it late evening, to kill all the wasps. Also once they are sprayed, they will swarm, but soon die. The spray reaches about 12 feet, so stay well away from the nest/hive when you spray. If they are in the ground, they are harder to kill. Some pest control places will come out and handle that, and some won't. I know this will sound crazy, but it does work. Even a pest control place that will not exterminate ground wasp (also known as ground hornets) said this is the best thing to do. Pour some gasoline down the hole and throw a lit match down it. But run like crazy as soon as you do and DO NOT stand over the hole. Fire will shoot up out of it and you could get burnt. That is how we kill ground wasps/hornets. So do several other people we know. Just like with the kind that are not in the ground, you have to wait till later evening to kill all them. They too are flying in and out of the nest during the day and only roost late evening and night.

Last summer I had a few problems with wasps' nests, however it was relatively simple to take care of. I just bought some raid insecticide made especially to use on wasps. The spray has a nozzel on the bottle that allows you to spray from about 10-15 feet away. The best time to spray is at night time or really early in the morning when the wasps are inactive.

Do it at night. They can't see you.
If the nest is underground just pour a little cup of gas down the hole. Don't use too much 'cause it kills grass too.
If the nest is above ground, many of the stores carry canned products that can be sprayed from a safe distance and kill on contact.

We poured hot water down the hole and sprayed down there, I think. It killed them in that one but there are lots of nests. The exterminator says wasps are tricky and you have to keep killing them.
