A farmer had a stone that he used to measure grain on his scale. One day his neighbor borrowed the stone, and when he returned, it was broken into four pieces. The neighbor was very apologetic, but the farmer thanked the neighbor for doing him a big favor. The farmer said that now he can measure his grain in one pound increments starting at one pound all the way to forty pounds (1, 2, 3, 17, 29, 37, etc.) using these four stones.

How much do the four stones weigh?

The stones weigh 1 pound, 3 pounds, 9 pounds and 27 pounds. These can be used in combination with each other on both sides of the scale to come up with any counterweight from 1 to 40 pounds.

10 pounds! think!!!!!

Altogether the four stones measure up to forty pounds, soooo.... the four stones divided by the fourty pounds they measure is ten! and easier way to put it is....

4/40= 10

(10) (10) (10) (10) (the four stones with the number of pounds they hold inside) 10+10+10+10=40 which is 1 whole divided in four added together. 40/4=10 I hope you understand

GAWD! I hope this is right!

Or is it 2 pounds? you have one 3 lb weight on one side and the 1 lb weight on the other side.. voila 2 lbs! I'm not sure which ones right but I know one of them is!

15 pound
If u got 4 stone that can measure in 1 pound increment then you should be able to measure from 1 to 15 pound based on the binary system of 8 , 4 ,2 and 1. Therefore the max will be 15 pound.
