read 1st Cor. Yes, it still happens today. When you get baptized in the holy spirit, you can then speak in tongues. It is a wonderful thing. When you pray and speak in tongue God understands you- it is not another language like Hebrew etc. and no people can't understand, only God. When it is interpreted, it is received as a message from God. Sometimes one person will speak out in tongue and someone else gets the interpretation from God. But normally, it is a way to speak to God. Basically, you don't even know what you are saying. You just know it is a wonderful blessing and a way to get closer to God spiritually.
No, it is not jibberish and it is not fake. I have been able to speak in tongue since I was about 13 and I am now 32. It is real, that I can promise.

In Acts Chapter 2 verse 4 we're told that the apostles were "filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." It continues to say, "There were me from every nation under heaven. and at his sound the multitude came together and they were bewildered because each one was hearing them speak in is own language."

When the Bible talks about "speaking in tongues" it is referring to speaking in different languages, as is demonstrated in the Book of Acts. Today, many Pentecostal churches would not agree with this. They would say that speaking in tongues was an act of the Holy Spirit that gave them some kind of "spiritual language." This, however, does not seem to be Biblical. Paul says in 1 Corinthians (talking to speaking in tongues) "There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me."

A sign of demon possession since the gift of speaking in tongues no longer occurs today the way it did in Bible times (1 Corinthians 13:8)

"Tongues" are languages, not unintelligible sounds like church leaders teach (See Acts 2:7-11). The purpose of speaking in different languages, or tongues, was to be able to reach non-Jews with the message of Jesus Christ.

Today, people who speak in tongues utter words or sounds that have no meaning in any language. It is in fact jibberish and has no practical service to God.

I used to sometimes attend a Pentacostal church with a friend. They spoke in tongues often at their church. I'm not entirely sure how valid it was, but they would fall on the floor and it looked like something that resembled an epileptic seizure. Then they would speak in ancient tongues, or language, such as Hebrew. Of course, I don't know any Hebrew, so I don't know what they were speaking. To me, it was rediculous!

The church in which I grew up believed in speaking in tongues. Many people throught the service would start speaking this way. They said that it was the spirit of the Lord moving and speaking through them.

Speaking in tongues is the Holy Spirit speaking through you and can be understood by all that hear in their native tongue.

If it sounds like babble that's what it is, babble.

Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

When someone goes delerious and starts speaking jibberish people thought this was some form of ancient Babel...the unitelligable language. it was sacrosant to speak in this way, and they thought there was always some message in the words, though the language of babalyon was destroyed with the empire... so we will never know..

At least i think thats the story...Could be reasons behind it that have been lost in time.

Speaking in tongues is basically speaking in a language like Latin, Hebrew, or Madarin Chinese, or some other one. The question isn't as hard as you are making it to be.
