At the beginning of this month I went to the pharmacy and had a rx filled. They entered all of my information into the computer so they can print out the labels and stick them to the box. Today I was looking at the box and noticed there was another label under mine so I peeled mine off to see if they just entered my information wrong or something. It turns out that someone didn't pick up their rx and they replaced her label with mine! I now have all of her information because they didn't try to peel the label off or black out her information. Should I tell her about the pharmacy doing somehting like that, is it legal for them to to that? I personally wouldn't want some stranger knowing EVERYTHING about me.

If I should report it, who would I report it to? Obviously someone just got sloppy and decided they didn't care what they were doing. I know everything about this girl now; name, address, phone number, birthday, doctor, doctor's number, when she had it filled... I feel like I need to do something so it doesn't happen to someone else, and possibly fall into the wrong hands.

The Rx messed up yes by not removing the old lable or if the old lable was not able to come off they must black it out. It is a concern and let the Rx manager know, it will be noted. Legal actions taken towards the Rx by reporting them to the Foods and Drug adminastration would not change a mistake, Id guess it was a simple mistake thats all.

As a near future pharmacist, I think that particular pharmacy needs to be more careful about peeling off labels. Sometimes labels are just persistant and stick to those boxes! Anyway, they should have been more careful with that patient's personal info. I wouldn't call that person about it and worry her, but I would call the pharmacy and let them know about your concern - especially in the days of the new HIPAA law.

In terms of the actual product, it is common for an item to be returned to stock if it has not been picked up after 2 weeks or so. You would never get a product that someone actually bought and returned to the pharmacy (that's illegal).

its legal to relabel a prescription that was never picked up and give it to somebody else, but youre suppose to take the tag off or scratch out the name..... you could report it if you really wanted to, it was probably a violation of the law but the government hardly ever enforces HIPPA, id just go talk to the pharmacy so they know it happened and dont do it again

OMG! I would definitely report that. You should not have someone else's info or their meds. Are you even sure that it is the same exact prescription? That is so wrong.
