The first public beta was released a few weeks ago. The final version is expected to be released something in late January 2007, although there is a good deal of speculation that this may be pushed back. The initial delays have essentially been caused because originally Vista was coded over the Windows XP Core. Unfortunatley, this didn't work out so well so Microsoft determined a total OS rewrite was best. However, many unexpected bugs have appeared, and different features have been phased out/redesigned, so that the delay keeps growing.

That's the big mystery, isn't it. Basically it is any one's guess. I think we should start a lottery, whoever guesses the date closest to the launch gets the taking. Seriously, it was SUPPOSED to be out in 2005, it got delayed due to "technical issues" basically they tried to heap the new code on top of Windows XP and it crashed. Then they completely rewrote Vista to be something entirely new, the early Betas had serious stability issues, that has now been corrected. One of the much touted (and now removed) features was WinFS, it remains to be seen if that file system will ever see the light of day. Vista was then delayed until "early" 2006. Well, obviously they didn't make it. Vista went back in for another overhaul, the sidebar got removed, came back, got removed and now as far as I know, it is back. Vista also has "gadgets" similar to Yahoo! Widgets. Oh let's see, there are numerous driver issues to overcome and 64-bit support is almost non-existent. We are now looking at "early" 2007 for the release of Vista and that is being optimistic. Note by "early" I do not mean January. That's right, Vista has slipped passed the January 2007 release. Though OEM versions may be available before the official retail versions. If I see them crop up on Newegg, I'm snapping one up. There is no way I am paying $460 for a new operating system. Oh and Office 2007 will cost you a whopping $680. Something is seriously wrong when software costs more than most of the computers that will run it (not my computer but... ummmm, average computers).
