Beijing is one of the oldest cities in China (although it was not called Beiing during the earliest time) and has many historical sites (like great wall, ming tomb, forbidden city etc). The city was only officially "born" 600 years ago...
It is a metropolitan now and may not be considered "traditional".
If you are interested in culture that was preserved throughout time, then visit the south-western part of the country. Provinces like Yun-nan, Gui-zhou, Si-chuan etc. These provinces are still populated with the most minority tribes who, some of them, are still quite traditional.

Bei Jing is a big capital city. Outside Bei Jing you may see some traditional building.
May be you can try Nan Jing and Chang An (Now call Xi An). These are also capital previously.
However, you may also want to consider Tai Bei in Taiwan, as the KMT too alot of Imperial items with them after the 1949 war. Many said it is more chinese than China. I think so too.

No. It is one of the most westernised cities in China. It is a modern metropolis like anywhere else in the world where traditional values, respect for heritage, and cultural history have fallen by the wayside in the rush for a new consumer driven culture and money.
Beijing is the second least traditional city in the PRC after Shanghai.

Not compared to where I live, and where I live is nothing compared to some of the smaller cities. If you want traditional, visit a village. If you want to see traditional buildings, you can see them scattered around any city, but Ping Yao or Li Jiang are both walled cities and UNESCO World Heritage sites. I've never been to Li Jiang. I hear it is much more beautiful than Ping Yao, but also more developed. Ping Yao is quite impressive.

beijing is def traditional when it comes to big/major cities in china...but if you go to smaller cities in rural china, then you will likely come across a lot more traditional places.
