Well first you have to say what kind of system you want. Do you want the whole set up? Indash aftermarket CD player, new front and rear speakers, subs, amp, and capacitor or yellow top battery? If so figure to spend no less than $1000. Also spending just $1000 will just get you a beginner set up as it a cheaper CD player, basic speakers, entry level subs, and an amp that doesnt put out too many watts. If you want to have an extremley loud car you will probably be spending at least $5000. My sisters first system was (2) 12'' Sony Xplod subs in a sealed box rated at 350 watts rms each and 1300 peak power each powered by an Xplod amp pushing 1200 watts peak and about 600 rms. She also had 4 Pioneer speakers and a capacitior and a CD player. She spent about $850 in all and that was on discount because we knew the owner of the customizing shop that she got the stuff from. So that I consider a beginner system. So figure about at least $1000.
Also if you want one really cheap try eBay:

lamborghini_1 got ripped off even for a discount. My system was only $410 (see below).
http://spkrbox1.spaces.msn.com/ for real "sound" advice.
Your system won't mean squat without a well designed box to put your subs in. Some manufacturers have recommendations as to dimensions of various types of boxes. It is best to find someone who builds boxes if you go with something other than a sealed box.
You should always match up RMS (Root Mean Square) watts of Subs and amp per channel as well as impedance's(resistances).
If your amp is rated at 4Ω don't subject it to 2Ω, it will fry.
Here is the formula for subs in parallel:
Z = 1 / (1/sub1 + 1/sub2 + 1/sub3 + ....)
For series, just add them up (sub1 + sub2 + ...).
You can mix and match these equations to get the right impedance required by your amp.
Example: 4 subs @ 4Ω each. If I connect two in parallel and the other two in parallel and tie the two pairs in series, I would have a total impedance(resistance) of 4Ω. So to the amp, it's just one sub.
You should use a capacitor as well.
Recommend for every 500 watts MAX you use a .5 Farad cap
Example: 1000 watts MAX - 1 Farad cap
Try http://www.soundomain.com/shop you can find some really good deals, and this site is manufacturer certified. VERY IMPORTANT WHEN SHOPPING ON-LINE!!!
You will also need what's called a "line level converter" if your stock head unit doesn't have RCA outputs or your amp doesn't have high-level inputs.
If you like I can send you some plans for reference. My plans are for a 4-th order band pass bass box that holds two 12's. Also included are java calculators you can use to figure parallel and series values given Ω values.
Just e-mail me sparky3489@yahoo.com
My system
Blaupunkt TSw1200 subs with a Sony Xplōd XM2200GTX.
My amp is 1200 watts, subs are 600 watts each, cap is 1.2 Farad
SPL is about 112 db
Total cost(so far) = $410

I don't know where 5000$ comes from. 5000$ for a system is more than a daily driver system.
For a good system look to spend 1500$. This includes a good head unit, a good amp, decent subs and wiring.
I have 2 JL W3 (v1s), a Pioneer headunit (Forgot which one, the one that has iPod intigration without the iPod intirgration) and a Rockford amp that I sold and now have a Power Acoustik amp (which I'm alot happier with). This setup cost me about 1300$

it depends what you want out of you system. do you want it to be loud, or sound good, or both? do you want to have gps, watch tv, and play video games in your car? i would say a "cheap" system, with no sub, you could probley get away with about $800 and thats buying nothing from best buy or circut city, and no subs. aviod those places. if you want a system that really sounds good, i mean is crystal clear, probley about 3-4k. if you want a really loud system, then the sky is the limit. you could spend 100k easy.
