The best overall right now is the F/A-18 E/F. It is an all around multi-task fighter that can perform air to air missions or air to ground missions. It's not as stealthy as the F-117 but the F-117 is not a fighter. All it can do is drop air to ground weapons (bombs). Once the F/A-22 gets fully operational then I might have to change my opinion.

Some of the best out there!

Best fighter? Air to air, nothing beats the F-15. Air to ground? Hard pressed to beat the A-10 ( old, but an incredible performer down in the mud with the troops, where it counts) best all round? Probably the F-18 c/d( I am a little prejudiced, I have worked on them for 6 years) Fastest? No fighter today can outrun the F-104 Starfighter. Most used the world over? ( and rugged as h*ll, to boot) the MiG-21. Coming up? If they ever get all the bugs worked out, the F-22 raptor will be hard to beat. The techs working on it call it the "Ramptor" because it spends much more time on the ramp than in the air.

I see a few answers that really have no pertinence to the question because either A) They are completely un-proven in air combat or B) They arent geared, or used in a fighter role. In my opinion the best fighter aircraft around would be a toss up between the new F/A-18E Super Hornet or even the Russian Su-37.

Gotta love the F-14s God Speed old friends.

Well for me, it's all about the SR- 71 (or known as the "Blackbird"). It's capable of its super high speed and the quick agility of maneuvering the turning point to shoot down the enemy line very quickly. The fighter jet-plane is known by many for its color and the feeling as if you're chasing a ghost.

I'd REALLY hate to say it, but from what I've read it seems that the Russian made SU-37 is the top dog when it comes to maneuverability, it can actually although shortly fly backwards due to the fact that engines are configured for thrust vector control.

The F-22 Raptor is now the king of the hill. First aircraft have been delivered to Langley AFB, VA, 94FS.

The F22 raptor has several firsts, the first fighter with supercruise (supersonic with no afterburner), stealth, thrust vectoring (super manueverable), and its also extreemley expensive.
