Alrighty. To give you a hint at how i know all this, my hair is to my thighs and i've cut 23 inches off of it for Locks of Love two years ago.
-If you really don't want to use vitamins, then the first thing to do is to wash your hair every other day or less. When you wash your hair, start at your scalp and use your fingertips to massage your scalp all over.
-Use your nails when your done and gently scrape at your scalp. Don't scratch yourself, just remove some of the excess skin, your scalp needs exfoliation too, just like your legs.
-Use conditioner. I personally like dove foaming. Don't condition the top of your head, just your ends.
-When you get out, gently wrap your hair in a towel, like you see in all those movies with the girl having a turban-esque towel on her head.
-When you take the towel off, if you blow dry, use a leave in conditioner, if you air dry or sun dry, fluff your hair. Your scalp can sour if your hair dries but your scalp doesn't.
-When your hair is dry, turn your hair over again, fluff to make sure your scalp is dry and massage it again.
-Try not to curl your hair or straightn it while you grow it, but if you do, use a cooler curler and a gentler product.
-About trimming, I suggest you do it. Not because of split ends, because split ends are just that, at the end. You want the begining of your hair to grow, not the end. You want to cut your hair because it prompts your body to make the chemicals that make hair and nails, kind of like pruning a rose bush to make it flower more often in the summer.
-The best was I've found to trim hair is to follow the moon. A few days after a full moon, go in and get your hair trimmed, an inch to two depending on how damaged your hair is. Why the full moon? Because women are tuned in with the currents more often than men, though it does work for guys that want long hair too.
-If you really want it to grow super fast, use a prenatal vitamin. There's also Hair Skin and Nails, which is also very awesome. The prenatal also helps your female body grow and function better. For the first year, I used both, and it grew almost eight inches. After that, I cut down to just the prenatals and its still growing great.
-The best advice to growing hair out? Love your hair. Treat it like what it really is, an extension of yourself. I have somewhat rough hands and calloused heels, but I have healthy, natural, and wonderfully colored hair. Take care of it, try not to fry it and be mean by overusing nasty chemicals on it.

Trim your split ends. Do anything to increase circulation (such as eating pepper, exercising regularly, and massaging your scalp).
Wash your hair every other day, only do it everyday if you have a very mild shampoo. Do everything you can to avoid further damage to your hair. Stay away from the sun, heat styling, perms, dyes, etc.
