First, you should take responsibility for your own weight and eating habits. Our children learn from their parents. Second, eating less does not cause much weight loss unless it comes with exercise. I would recommend no sugar drinks including soft drinks and phony juice drinks. Food should never be a reward for good behavior or something used to avoid depression. Let me put it this way: no candy, no dessert unless based on fruits; and no avoidance of breakfast. A vegetarian diet is also a plus. If your son has gained 12 lbs this year and if it continues he will be 72 lbs heaver at age 18. Being overweight causes terrible health consequences: diabetes, lower life span, high blood pressure, and decease.
Do something now. Start walking. Cut the fat.
Eat raw food. Stop the excuses. Eventually, a healthy lifestyle will be more fun, but you just have to work for it.

I was the same way. I started gaining around 15 pounds a year, I didn't understand. Then I realized I was eating out of boredom and eating too much. Unfortunatly, when I realized this I was already overweight. So I then decided to excersise ALOT more and cut the calories. As your son gets older he may start losing the weight as he gets taller. Just try playing some sports with him and get him active. Don't buy alot of food with alot of fat and calories in it. It may be hard for him at first but he will get used to it. Eventually he will gradually start losing weight. try eating healthy with him, then he will want too. I hope this works, it did for me.

Well First as his parent you can set a good example.
Are you overweight?
Do you eat healthy ?
What eating and exercise habits are YOU teaching by example?

As the parent you determine what foods are in the house and what activities your child does or does not participate in.

Lose the chips, sugar snacks, soda, and other unhealthy foods. Just don't buy them, don't have them in the house.

Stay away from fast foods and prepared prepared/packaged meals.

Turn off the TV and the video games. Get physically active and involve your son.

The best way to help your son is to show your son

All you have to do to gain weight like that is to consume roughly 100 calories a day over your needed amount. To counteract this, you have to burn a little over 100 extra calories a day. Start with the simple things like adding 100 steps into your normal routine a day. Park in the back of the parking lot, take the stairs. If you want something a bit more darastic take him to the pool. You burn more calories and have a great cardio workout when you swim or aqua jog! In addition to these drink green tea. Green tea plain without added sweetners will help speed up your body motabilism allowing you to burn just a few more calories a day.

Make sure he is getting the right amount of food from the different food groups. Limit (but not take away) processed sugars. Also encourage exercise in some way. If he continues to gain weight have him see his pediatrician. There may be a medical reason for the weight gain.

Take if from a 50 year old that has been on diets most of his life, weight is about calories in vs. calories out. To loose weight you have to eat less calorie or you must burn more calorie. Teach your son to make better choices on what to eat and get him up and moving. Its not so much about what you eat. Its more about being active and knowing what it is that you feed yourself. There's no magic bullet or right diet.

Uhh.....you can make him go on a light diet (SUBWAY!) or make him run at least two miles a day (like me) and then, gradually increase the distance as he gets in better shape. Or just make him do something outside that is physically excerting. Hope this helps!
