For the longest time, I have had a really great metabolism, however, that's changed recently.

Within the last five years, I have gained a total of 95 pounds, but 45 of that has been within just the last six months. My diet hasn't really changed at all, but the weight has just begun to add up to the point where it's become very noticeable. My belly is beginning to hang over my pants, even.

Is there anything (aside from the obvious answer of eat less, etc.) that I can do to try and slow down this weight gain? 45 pounds in six months seems a little out of hand to me.

I am 5' 10" and I weigh 220 lbs.

I think you need to see a doctor. This kind of weight gain not in association with drastic changes in lifestyle or eating habits could be the cause of another issue. Please see a doctor...

Unfortunately, as we age, our metabolism slows down. It becomes harder to lose and sometimes even to maintain weight. Has your activity level changed? You may be able to still eat what you like but start walking for 20-30 min. 5 times a week. Otherwise, I am afraid a diet is your only option. Let's face it, nobody wants to see their belly hanging over their pants!
The issue of 45 pounds in 6 months is scary if your exercise and/or diet have not changed. I would recommend you see your doctor to have your thyroid and other things checked out. Sometimes a medical condition can be the reason for excessive weight gain.

It is very common and normal for your weight gain to slow down towards the end of pregnancy. Your stomach is smaller because your baby takes up most of the room inside so you are not as hungry. However, if you start to gain more that 1-2 pounds a week, that could mean pre-eclampsia so keep a check on your weight.

Any time you experience a sudden, unexplained weight loss or gain, you need to talk to your doctor. You may have a thyroid problem (they can develop at any age) or something else that needs to be looked at. If the Dr finds no physical cause, then he will do a metabolic workup to determine what has changed. Be ready to diet - if it is your metabolism, you will need to adjust your eating patterns for the rest of your life to maintain a healthy weight.

Good luck

I have had this problem at various times in my life. I recommend that you get psychotherapy.

To loose weight: eat a balanced diet, eat less, and exercise more.
To keep the weight off, you should loose about 1 pound per week.
