They do, just highly simplified from us, and some are smarter than others. Like when I watch a TV show that has barking dogs on it, 2 of my dogs hear the barking, look around, and make the logical decision, and look BEHIND the TV for the dogs. Only one transcends that, and actually looks at the screen. One made the right call, but the others did make a logical choice. They hear barking in the corner, they see no dogs, the dogs must be BEHIND the box in the corner. Even though there have never actually been dogs in the corner, they deduce that they must be there based on the evidence they have. That is reasoning.
P.S. To Judas, yes, my dogs (all 3 of them) run down the stairs, as they know they can get out of the door downstairs., they don't jump out the window as they do not know this will work, while the dog door downstairs ALWAYS works.

JR--quite simply put --YES dogs reason--but--not with logic---logic is setting two or more standards against one another for analysis to conclusion and that conclusion must make the absolute in "sense" given the elements of the equations----The reasonings of a dog are limited (even though quite wide in range) to deduction......deductive reasoning pitting elements of a limited framework of knowledge to a particular conclusion--as in--how do I get to that food--I know it is behind this door--I know that doors open--I also know that they are usually wood---etc etc ----HOPE THIS HELPS

No, they deal strictly voice tones and relay treats with a 'happy" tone or a light swat from a newspaper with an 'angry' tone.
I've read that a dog can understand approximate 90 words-which it's why it's important that you use the same words when training....don't say "off the sofa" one time and 'down from the sofa" the next time.-They learn much faster with the consistant command (and then praise them when they do it right!)
I DO believe, though, that a dog is VERY sensitive to their master/family's emotions-they know when you're happy, depressed, angry, etc-and ACT accordingly.

if you took a dog upstairs and threw a ball out of the window, do you think it would run back down stairs to get it?
no.
it would jump out of the window and die.
do you reason with logic?

Yes, it appears that dogs have a small capacity to reason. However, I've never seen a dog play chess.

I have an invisible fence just installed and my dogs rather be on the deck instead on in the grass. When they do go down to the grass, they go under the deck rather then the side by the fence.

I end going to church as quickly as I found out that my canines did no longer could desire to pass to confession like I did ! guy most of the shi-t he did made me appear as if a saint ! I swear I by no ability, ever, ever peed on the rug; by no ability licked my balls interior the front room crammed with organisation;bit somebody purely for gazing me humorous; dug a hollow interior the backyard to get decrease than the fence;chewed on the boss's slippers; tipped over the rubbish; etc., etc., etc. yet my memories of him are ever so warming and relaxing, the delicate caress he so enjoyed, the wag of his tail, the nuzzle of convenience while issues have been at their worst, the solace he presented to me, all of those issues are a techniques greater beneficial than what the Church presented(10 Hail Marys, 20 Our Fathers, and now make an request for forgiveness) So I forgave him his failings as he forgave mine and we had a loving relationship all throughout his existence. as quickly as I get to Heaven I totally anticipate to work out him taking Holy Eucharist interior the species of Milk Bones on the Communion rail ! So i assume i in my opinion do no longer want a canines to help me discover my thank you to Heaven because of the fact my canines is waiting there for me---which incidentlay is an incentive for me to be good sufficient that i can rejoin him there while my time comes !

no it's purely instinct, besides if they could reason they would be one step closer to world domination and the only thing holding them back would be the lack of an opposable thumb. lmao :)
