I believe this expression has more to do with the abundance of nature and natural beauty than with religion. and in that reading of it, a "god's own country" could be anywhere the natural beauty is awe-inspiring. a quick yahoo search brings up Kerala in India which is utterly jaw-droppingly gorgeous. but back to the question of whether america is one? I would have to say yes. there is stunning beauty just a half hour out of NYC driving up the hudson river. The wildlife is so numerous even in the major metropolitan centers that you have to be careful driving. Deer, raccoons, rabbits, eagles, coyote are daily sights pretty much anywhere. compare this to other countries in the world. asia? where are all the animals? where are all the birds? Further, the expression could refer to "unspoiled nature". America is still pretty much an empty country. there are some huge cities but there's a lot of space in between. Exits on some midwestern highways can be hours apart. Really,... there must be a million "god's country"s on this planet. "some rivers are only an inch wide".

No, the christian/jewish god created the WORLD, not America. Also, christianity originated in the middle east. It just so happens that islam and buddhism took over that portion of the world and christianity is the major religion in America.
