I checked out a book long ago and returned it. It was a brilliant book, and now I cant remember its name.

Well, if you can believe the "crime movies" that you see, the libraries do keep track of the books you check-out. According to the movies (and also according to newspaper accounts that I have read), the police have gone to libraries and determined the nature of books that suspects have checked-out -- for example, books about poisons -- in order to build a case against someone. But -- whether a library would do the same research for an Average Joe who just wanted to remember a book that they had read a while back may be a different question! It may depend on how "nice" your librarian is. Easiest way to find out -- phone your library and talk to the librarian. And be "charming" when you call. (After all, they are our public servants, right? We pay taxes to pay their salaries.)

Yes they do for that year. But if this is a different year, then no. They only keep track of your books for that particular year.
