Photoshop is what I use..

1. Make a duplicate of the photo.
2. Remove the color from photo 1..desaturate, turn bl;ack and white, remove color.
3. Outline the object in Photo 2 using the lasso, and copy it
4. Paste it into photo 1, and you have the color part over the black and white.

I think the easiest way to do this is as follows (using photoshop or paintshop pro)

1. Under layer in the menu choose: "Duplicate Layer"

2. You will now have two layers - the original image (probably called "Background" and a copy of the image called "Background copy"

3. Select the background copy layer (it will already be selected after step 2)

4. Choose image "desaturate" or use the channel mixer to turn this layer black and white

5. Choose the eraser tool with opacity set to 100%

6. Start erasing on the part of the black and white image you want in color - as you erase the black and white the color will show through

7. Vary the brush size - start with a big brush and then use a smaller brush at the edges

8. Merge your layers and save the file.

Here's an example (I erased the black and white flowers and the color flowers showed through):

Use Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements 6. Here is the procedure: As is true of many procedures in Photoshop, there are several ways of doing selective color. This is a quick and easy method. First open your photo in PS of course. Then go to Layer - Duplicate Layer Click OK Then go to Image - Adjustments - Hue / Saturation Drag the Saturation slider all the way to the left to make the photo black and white. Click OK Then get the ERASER tool from the tool box on the left side of the screen. It is usually the next tool under the clone stamp tool. Just hover your mouse over the tool, and it will say Eraser. When you have selected the Eraser, go up to the Brush options box at the top of the screen, and click on the downfacing arrow. Set the Hardness of the brush to 100% so you will have accurate control of selection. You may also need to raise or lower the brush size to suit. Erase away any black and white from where you want the color to be revealed. When done go to Layer - Flatten Image Then just do a Save As to wherever you want to save the photo. hope this helps you steve

if you want a more traditional way, try handcoloring.

1. obtain oil paint, q-tips, cotton balls, and toothpicks
2. squeeze a very very small amount of oil paint on the area you want to color.
3. spread it around evenly with a q-tip. it will look streaky
4. very very lightly, smooth it over with a cotton ball
5. if you get it outside the area you want to color, simply remove it with a q-tip.
6. if you change your mind you can remove the paint up to 48 hours after application

this is done on a printed picture.

it looks really nice when it's done. to see examples, try googling "handcoloring".
