The first answer is correct. There are over 300 species of Populus, including cottonwoods, poplars and aspens.

I would say, however, that it is really not that difficult to tell them apart with flowers. Look closely at the catkins... (you may need a hand lense) if you see tiny stamens with anthers you know you have a male; if you see only styles and stigmas, you have a female.

It should be noted that this family (Salicaceae) reproduces mainly vegitatively (not by seed).

yes, male and female trees
only a really good expert can tell the difference unless they are in bloom, then the one producing the cotton is the female tree!

at flowering stage it is easier to identify than at the vegetative stage
