I am looking into how to remove all color in a photo but leave one area color... example: everything black and white but leave someones shirt red.... or the rose bud yellow , using a free program

I don't know what program you are using, but I'll tell you how to do it in Photoshop (and it may give you an idea for use in whatever free program you find)

Open up the image in Photoshop
Create a new Hue/saturation Adjustment Layer
Drag the sliders all the way to the left to create a B&W image
Click Ok
Select your eraser tool
Select the Adjustment layer
Erase the item you want kept in color
--- That will create the item in it's original color with everything else black and white.
