First - it's a homing pigeon, most likely, that you have - not a carrier pigeon. Second.
If the band on it begins with an AU, then go to http://www.pigeon.org and check the band list there. It will give you an address for the club secretary (and possibly a phone number as well)
If the band begins with I.F., then go to http://www.ifpigeon.com/ and also look for their band listings
If you're in Canada or the northern half of the U.S. and you find a bird whose band begins with CU, then go to http://www.canadianracingpigeonunion.com/
and check for their band list.
If you're in Europe, I'd have to know what the band reads to get you to the right country association.

Let it go, it will find its owner! If it won't go for some reason, I'd put an ad in the paper, most papers let you put found ads in for free, or sometimes the birds have small metal rings around their legs with a number on.

Obviously you can catch it, so open up the wings and on the underside there is very likely to be the owners telephone number. GB97 is just the year and country locator - British bird born last year, you need the whole number then your local racing club will be able to identify the owner.

domestic pigeons don't do well in the wild. There should be an ID band on the pigeon - a pigeon club will be able to help you trace the number on that to find where it belongs.

It should have an I.D. bracelet. Call your department of natural resources. They should be able to help. If not let it go . It will do better in the wild than captivity.
