Try the Kodak C530. It is small and simple to use. Plus, it is pretty inexpensive. You can easily research it online. It isn't anything particularly fancy, but is great for just taking family/vacation pictures. Plus, the software is easy to use also.

i have a similar model, sony t9 but am a little bit disappointed with it. it shakes a lot especially during night shots as the camera is thin, t5 is even thinner and so the problem is even worse. picture quality isnt as what i had expected. they dont have white balance. there is a lot of noise. but it is ofcourse very compact to use. the battery life is very good too.
i used these two websites and i feel they are very good to know about the quailty of digital cameras in the market.

When I compared, I gave importance to night shots and low lights. Fuji Fine pix f10 is good for the low light shots, but I was said the picture quality wasnt so good. Kodak didnt do good when i tried at night. Canon ixus 55 also falls in the same range, and is comparable with t5. It was also ok. I think the sony N1 is nice among the sony compact camera models that they have now. But again I wont know of its picture quality and its also expensive. Visit a store to try the cameras in the price range that you are looking for, and read the reviews of it and may it will give you some idea which is better.
I dont think t5 a good choice apart from it is ease to carry. It just shakes terribly and so the pictures turn out bad. Try it out in a store.

The place to read reviews of digital camera's is this spot:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html

Looking at the basics on the review site...... I see it uses Sony's own MEMORYSTICK cards.... which are expensive
And it also uses a "Proprietary battery"... which means when it's worn out from being recharged so many times it'll cost you a fair bit to replace it, if indeed they're still available.
Though the upside is it has a Carl-Zeiss lens = regarded as the best.

For similar money, there's the Casio Exilim ex-z600
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/ex-z600.html
which is slightly slimmer..... still uses a properitary battery, but is 6 megapixels and uses cheaper memory cards.

And the Fuji Finepix F10
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/fuji_f10.html
Which looks like isn't quite as slim, but still a compact & shares a few components with Fuji's top of the Range Digital SLR camera.

Or the Fuji Finepix A350... which is the next one up from my A345... marginally bigger than the SONY, but still compact... 5.2 megapixels. http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/fuji_a350.html
Uses cheaper XD memory cards and also 2x AA batteries, so you can use them in an emergency + also higher capacity rechargeables like these: http://www.steves-digicams.com/nimh_batteries.html
Here's some examples of what I've managed with my lesser model: http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jduck1979/album?.dir=5cfdre2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jduck1979/my_photos

Go pick up the July (current) issue of Consumer Reports. They have a great article on choosing the right digital camera for you this month.
It will be the best $5 you spend this month

I would get a 5.1 megapixel camera and look for a 3x zoom. Get one from a reputable manufacturer, and you'll probably do okay.

You can look for individual reviews on Epinions.com
