I'm a bus rider, to work and back most days. I work at a phone center and must talk ALL DAY to people I'd rather not talk to. I get on the bus, take my favorite seat in the back, and plug in my iPod. Is it so wrong that I'm done talking to people I don't care about about stuff that doesn't matter, or at least won't matter after the hour long bus ride is over (I'm usually the last person off the bus, except the driver)
This one guy started talking AT me, since I wasn't listening, and would not stop. There was a rattle on the bus that got louder, and he said "I'm going to move up front where we can hear each other." so I said "I'm staying her, thanks" He looked at me like I shot a nun.

My one co-woprker is the opposite, and his bus is full of chatter, and he loves it. for the most part, mine is full of not so awkward silence.

You're well within your rights to "vant to be alone." I'm an introvert myself, and I need my downtime to re-energize. But I also used to work in a similar situation on a Help Desk. Not only did I have to be yakking all day, but the sound of a ringing phone STILL raises my blood pressure.

It's unfortunate that some people just can't read body language, and you're forced to point out that you don't feel like talking. If you'd rather not have to do that, you can try picking up a newspaper or mag that you can bury your face in. Then you won't even have to respond to their visual signals that they want to talk.

I agree with you. I ride the bus often but as a female have a different problem with trashy guys trying to hit on me. The bus operator does nothing. I have been on a bus many times that was almost empty only to have a guy get on and take a seat next to me and try to talk to me. I also hate chatterboxes that talk across the bus whether to me or to another person. It is stressful enough going to and fro on a bus and it would be nice to at least be able to relax in peace. Just listen to your ipod and ignore anyone around you. It will just look like you can't hear them.

If I were you I would just kindly explain to the person why you didn't want to talk (if you didn't want to hurt their feelings).

I really don't like talking after work either. I need at least a good thirty minutes of silence or music...or doing something mindlessly.

Just pretend you are deaf, thats the only answer, if they try sign language pretend you are blind. Maybe wear dark glasses and buy a cane and try the blind look first, people would be uneasy and unlikely to start a conversation with a blind guy.

I would simply tell them that you talk to people all day for work and when you are out you need some down time to relax and chill and would prefer to enjoy your music peacefully & without conversation

You should have told this guy that you'd file a complaint for harrassment against him--take his name and phone number, and report him next time. You have a right to be undisturbed by jabberholics.

You don't have to do things you don't want to after you get off of work. That's your time.you did the right thing by saying no to that dude. What I can say about that is he's not use to someone telling him no so you caught him by surprise. That's the way to go girl. you used your mind. And By the way he acted it sounds like he's use to getting things his way. just say to yourself, " Well he finally met his match and just go on with life."

If you do not want to talk to people, you shouldn't feel obligated to. It's nice to have peace and quiet sometimes. It's not to not have to talk to people sometimes. If people take issue with that, that's their problem.
