If you have a primary care physician, see him first, especially if it is not life threatening. There are a lot of clinic's now that are available early in the morning until late in the evenings. Most people clog the ER with minor problems because they don't have any insurance. The clinics are cheaper than and ER. Having insurance is cheaper than the 2 mentioned above going to see your PCP. Now if something is going on that came on all of a sudden and it has never happened before, then by all means go to the ER. Example you never had a seizure and you have one, then there is a definite problems going on that needs attention. Good luck.

Basic guidelines for an ER visit include but are not limited to:
Chest Pain**, Difficulty Breathing** or severe asthma**
that does not respond to your inhaler.
Acute Severe Abdominal / Pelvic Pain**,
Acute severe headache that is not normal for you, esp. with blurred vision, confusion, nosebleed, enequal pupils, numbness or weakness on one or both sides of the body, syncope, fever, etc**. These also apply with head trauma, see next item.
Any head trauma** esp. with nausea and vomiting and some of the above symptoms. Any broken bones should be treated ASAP except toes & fingers, they can usually wait awhile.
Any severe alergic reaction**, esp. if it causes difficulty breathing, head/neck/chest swelling or tightness and hives.
Any abnormal severe bleeding**, Cuts and lacerations that are large enough to require stiches or that do not stop or do have severe bleeding**. Any severe burns**, Active Labor or other Obstetric emergency. Altered mental status or LOC, Drug or Alcohol overdose, Poisoning, Being suicidal, to drop off an unwanted newborn. Any severe or moderate trauma, gunshot and stab wounds, Falls, Heat or cold related emergencies.
This is not a complete list, but it does contain items that warrant an ER visit. For problems marked with **, depending on the situation, calling 911 should be considered.

Any condition that alters/compromises your airway, breathing, circulation, mental state, level of concsciousness and motor skills need to be addressed immediately. Also any broken bones or fractures need to be checked out immediately too. Also any pains in and around your torso area should be examined promptly.
The above covers a wide gammut of diseases and illnesses from choking to strokes to heart attacks, illicit drug use, trauma (mental and physical), etc. I hope you find this useful to you and those who rely on your help and assistance. Good luck!

Only go to the ER if life or limb is in danger. Too many people go to the ER because they don't want to wait for a doctor's appointment at an office. This clogs up the ER and often people who really need it die because there isn't room for them.

Generally if it is Life Threatening, Limb broken or impaired, or the pain is too great to wait for a doctor.

Some diseases and illnesses can be life threatening.

Broken Bones DEFIANTLY!!!! (except Finger and Toes) Use a Popsicle Stick if you break a finger and get a doctors appt. All they can do is splint it.
