Assuming that you would rather have a platonic relationship with him, let him know that though you feel that he is a very nice guy, you would much rather be friends. Explain to him why you think a friendship will be more beneficial to the two of you, and if he declines, move on.

While the others gave some pretty good answers, I personally think that leading him on [into the relationship] when you know that you are not interested and will only dump him later on sometime may not be the kindest thing to do and will probably hurt him more at that time as he may be under the impression that the relationship was stronger than what it really was, and so on.
Personally, I would just tell him that you [may] like him as a friend but not anything more than that. He wouldn't be the only guy who may have had his heart broken by a woman anyway...

You can tell something like: this period I'm not really to start a relationship but maybe in the future...
In this way you dont have to tell him straight that you dont want him...

Give him the friend's speech. He's a guy he should be used to rejection . He will probably laugh it off with his buddies.

calmly tell him that youre really not that interested but he really is a nice guy and mention a friend you think hed like and like him back.

Tell him "I'm not good enough for you" or
"It's not you, it's me." or
"Can we still be friends?"
That will convince him that your are an idiot, and he won't want you anymore.
