We have moved into a house that seems to be infested with cats. I need to get the smell out of the barn and I need a humane way to keep them away from the property.

Get a Border Collie and put him to work herding the cats off the property! Mind you, I love cats, but feral cats can be a problem I think a herding dog is a very humane way to handle the problem. A local golf course used to have a problem with Canada Geese. They were going to start killing them...a local animal rights group offered them a Border Collie as an alternative resolution. Now, Sterling is a full time employee of the golf club and everybody is happy. The geese have found some other place to go and the Border Collie is just loving having a job to do. They're great dogs for farms. I don't, however, recommend a Border Collie if you have small children...not the best family dogs as they tend to nip things that remind them of sheep! Good luck!

We live in a town that is filled with strays that are owned by people who refuse to take care of them or keep as inside cats.. therefor we have a similar problem.. talking to neighbors doesn't always work especially when they either deny owning the cat(s) OR refuse to do a thing saying in short they do not care.

My husband would pee out side and the cats would stay away... it would have to be re-done after a rain or every week or so.. but it kept most cats away.. moth balls will also work.. cayene pepper has been known to work but must be reapplied to the areas where it was spread.

You could also invest in a motion seor controlled sprinkler that will turn on at the first sign of movment and hopefully scare it away.. BUT THE best thing we ever did was..
Call animal control have them set traps and be rid of them once and for all. We ended up buying our own trap and then call to have them removed by the control officer.

Killing poisoning etc are illegal and just not right... you would not want to get caught.
You can also call the city.. because many times... there is a leash law but many people do know realize that many times it applies to cats as well and the owner could get fined. You would have to check on that though because every town etc is different.
Strays spread disease and filth and are just a terrible empidemic of sorts in almost all areas.

Orange peels are a natural repelent for most cats. And they also help with the smell. Another solution is a product called Feliway. It comes in a spray as well as a difuser that you can plug in. It releases feline phermones into the air which usually keeps the cats from marking in that area.
If they are stray cats then you may want to contact your local SPCA or humane society to see about finding them homes. At the very least, try contacting a feral cat spay/neuter release program in your area. Many of these programs will do this at no charge to you and getting them fixed will help with the marking problems.
This website offers some alternative solutions as well.

Mothballs. You can place the mothballs around your barn. It will eliminate the urine smell PLUS keep the cats away. Adopt a dog to scare them away. The reason why the barn is a popular hangout for the cats is because of the warmth (and possibly mice, if there's hay stored in there). Find out why the cats go to your barn.

If they are cats that belong to the neighbors, discuss this with them and tell them you don't want them on your property. If they are stray kitties, call the local animal control. They will come to your property and trap the kitties for free and take them to a local shelter.
In terms of getting rid of the smell in the barn, I assume you are referring to urine smell? Nature's miracle is amazing. You can buy it in Walmart and in most pet stores. It is an enzyme that breakes down cat urine and you can spray it all over the barn. If this is too expensive for you, I have also had decent results with vinegar.
Good luck!

I think they have little machines that you can plug in that emit very high-pitched sounds that humans can't hear but animals can. That would be enough to keep them away I'd think. Check out a hardware store (i.e Home Depot, Lowes, etc.). They may have something like that. Good luck!

Do NOT use mothballs. they only stink up your yard, kill the cats, and have no effect at all. one of the cats took a dump right on the ones my neighbor put out! (i begged her not to but she wouldnt listen).dogs may be a safe alternative. you can also call your local humane shelter or pet store to see if they will take them off your hands.

i have a friend who lived on a huge hill. she had this one cat that kept coming and coming to her house. every time she would just throw the cat down the hill. it eventually decided to leave her alone and never come back. no it is not dead because she said she had seen it walking around the other parts of the neighborhood.

Cats do not like any thing like orange or lemon peels, you can try putting that around the place.
