The pope's ability to forgive sins (and any priest's, for that matter) comes form Christ's words to Peter, who was viewed as the first pope of the catholic church:
Matthew 18:18 - Truly I say to you, Whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Matthew 16:18 - And I say also to you, That you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:19 - And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The Pope does not think he is God! He is, so to speak, the chief of the Catholic Church. The Pope, nor any priest can forgive sins, God is the only one who can forgive them in the Catholic Church. All priests work like "God's ears", or in other words, they are the means of communication between people and God. When they say that the sins have been forgiven, it's because they know that God forgives all sinner if they really repent.
Anybody who thinks that the Pope is God... is completely wrong and lack of information. I am glad you have decided to learn about other faiths. that can help us understand each other better.

The Pope should be no different than any other Christian, except perhaps in terms of religious knowledge. However, for some to claim that he is closer to God than others (or has the ability to pardon sins) is wrong. I am a Muslim, and we don't have a central authority which we must go to in order to gain favor with God. We go to God directly, with no intermediary, and only He can forgive sins. Our religious figures are meant for guidance and are no way affiliated with a person's relationship with his creator.
Good luck.

If the truth be kNOWn, rather than lies believed, forgiveness of sins is only plausible by the abolition of law, since law is the source of sin: Rom 5:13, and the "strength" of sin's death sting: 1Cor 15:56, which is to say the "strong man" of the hse of sin & death. And to spoil such a hse, we first bind the strong man: law.
As for the Pope, let's compare the last one to the Bible:
John-Paul II: the long tradition of sacrifice must continue
Bible: Will of God: "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice"
God never desired, nor ever took pleasure, in sacrifice for sin,
(Ps 40:6; Ps 51:16; Hos 6:6; Mt 9:13; Mt 12:7; Heb 10: all)
which cannot purge the conscience of sin, because it is by the law and of the law, which is the root source of sin. Not to mention receiving the promise (eternal life) comes after doing the will of God: I will have mercy(grace), and not sacrifice(law). Not to mention sin, when "it is finished", brings death (not life): Jam 1:15.
The "grace" of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

He believes that he is of God - that he is chosen by God. The Catholic church is then to believe that everything he says is devine. As far as forgiving sins, the Bible says to confess them to be forgiven. The Catholic church in a slight deviation from the Bible says that only the Pope can talk to God. So you tell a priest to tell a bishop to tell a cardnial to tell the pope to tell God that you're sorry.

the church is very ambiguous with its teachings..if u ask most practicing catholics whether they worship Mary the mother of God they will say yes when the church denies this..they have glorified her to a point where she is of almost greater importance than Jesus,,.in addition many Catholics that I have spoken too do not consider themselves Christians which shows that Jesus is not the center of their beliefs..this is a serious problem and extends to the pope issue..the church believes he is the head of church and that he has what is called "papal infalliblity" that all of the Pope's instructions on faith and morals are not wrong because of the divine guidance he receives...it is scary that the lay investiture, simony, and payment for absolution was under the "infallible" guidance of the pope...i could go on and on in critcisms of the Catholic Church but i'll stop...1

The pope thinks "he is God" that people should confess their sins to him.
Look what the Bible says--
2THESS.2:3-4 = "LET NO MAN DECEIVE YOU BY ANY MEANS: FOR THAT DAY SHALL NOT COME, EXCEPT THERE COME A FALLING AWAY FIRST, AND THAT MAN OF SIN BE REVEALED, THE SON OF PERDITION; WHO OPPOSETH AND EXALTETH HIMSELF ABOVE ALL THAT IS CALLED GOD, OR THAT IS WORSHIPPED; SO THAT HE AS GOD SITTETH IN THE TEMPLE OF GOD, SHEWING HIMSELF AS GOD."
Rev.13:1 "...AND UPON HIS HEADS THE NAME OF BLASPHEMY."(Blashemy means claiming to be God; remember the Jews accused Jesus of blasphemy--Matt.26:65; Luke 5:21.)
Rev.13:18 "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
It tells you exactly who the beast is: from the clues in the Bible.
(REV.13:18) on the Pope's Crown (tiara) are these letters: VICARIUS FILII DEI; what do they signify?
OUR SUNDAY VISITOR, (CATHOLIC WEEKLY) BUREAU OF INFORMATION," HUNTINGTON, IND., APRIL 18, 1915.
ROMAN NUMERALS FOR THESE LETTERS ARE: V=5; I=1; C=100; X=10; U=5; D=500; L=50 = THEY ADD UP TO 666.
The letters are in Latin for 'Vicar Of The Son Of God." it means "IN PLACE OF THE SON OF GOD".
Our Sunday Visitor, (Catholic Weekly) "Bureau of Information," Huntington, Ind., April 18, 1915.
I believe they use the Catholic Catechism for their Bible. (the 2nd commandment was taken out and the 4th commandment changed.") Catholic Doctrinal Catechism, page 194.

Neither -
He represents the ongoing tradition of Church leaders passed down from St. Peter. He is blessed, but no more "of God" than anyone else. He certainly is not God.
