Beer is a general category and lager is a sub-category of beer. Lagering is a process in which the fermented beer is held for several weeks at cool temperatures (35 to 40 deg F) . Lagering will smooth out and mellow a beer and sometimes bring out more complex flavors.

Lager is bottom fermenting and ale is top fermenting plus lager is fermented at cooler temps than ale
