I would like to visit in August, but I don't have a clear picture of what it's like.

I live in uptown New Orleans. About 220,000 people live in the city, and 7-800,000 have moved back to all of the suburbs (metairie, kenner, gretna, harahan, etc...) My neighborhood is doing well and my life is mostly back to normal, but with some noticable changes. I'm optimistic that this city will come back, but it will take many years of hard work.

The only reason not to visit now is the hot humid weather. I would wait until october. Most tourist attractions are open - restaurants, bars/clubs, the zoo, the aquarium, museums.

New Orleans is open for business

It really depends on what area you are wanting to visit. I would call the Chamber of Commerce there and find out what hotels , restaraunts, clubs etc. are up and running, what kinds of things will be going on in the city at the time you plan to visit. I know that most of the areas just on the outskirts are doing fairly well but there are some places in the city that are still pretty much in upheaval. Think about the reasons you want ot visit and call the chamber and see if it is worth your time.
Personally, we left New Orleans before the hurricane and I couldn't be happier, it's not as glamorous as people make it out to be- there are much better places all over the country to spend a vacation, but that is just my opinion.

I used to live just across the lake in Slidell, La my brother is a singer in New Orleans and y sister just went back home to N.O. As I remember Before the storm it was very hot and humid in Aug. It sorta feels like walking out of a really hot shower into a hot room. The only thing I can say is drink lots of bottled watter(they have NASTY tasting water) and enjoy the food coz that is all that is left of the Big Easy.
