I have marble and I hate it, but that is a personal reference of mine. Marble can be good if you like it and it comes in a WHOLE lot of colors, size strips and/or tiles. Mine is a gray and white color and it just doesn't go with the rest of the house.

I had an ugly yellow cream brick fireplace. It was an eye sore. I had a tile guy come in and put a multi colored green slate around the opening and the step up area.

I then painted the rest of the cream yellow brick a warm brown mustard color, to compliment the warm colors in the green slate. Wow it made a huge difference. Now it is a focal point and it looks great. I got away with the slate because of the brick. It looks somewhat rustic and the combo works very well together.

What is your existing fireplace now? Brick or just a drywall with a tile surround? I am not sure what you mean by a wood fireplace. Marble will give it a very modern look. It can look striking as well, it just depends on what other elements you have in the room.

PS do a google and yahoo search for 'marble fireplace' on images, I got a lot of inspiration and ideas from that!

I have black marble (with white veining) surrounding my fireplace and on the mantle and raised hearth. It looks beautiful. Very elegant. However, be aware that marble is a porous stone and may absorb oils and other stains if not sealed. It also is etched by acids - and some common household things (lemonade) as well as cleaning solutions (citrus based cleaners) contain acids. It is not difficult to maintain as long as you are aware of what to avoid. Consider if it is going to be subjected to much wear (i.e., sliding the log holder across the hearth...) Marble is fairly soft and scratches fairly easily. I have several chips in the hearth caused by the Christmas stocking hangers falling off the mantle... In addition, I just recently read that the heat from a fireplace can cause discoloration of black marble surrounding it - (fading it to a smoky grey). I am not sure of the effect that heat might have on other colors or other black stones....We have rarely used this fireplace so I have not noted any changes in color in mine. Good luck
