Mathew 11:34-38
"34 Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and a man's foes will be those of his own household. 37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me."
If you don't believe it really says that, grab your Bible and look it up.

sorry, it's Mathew 10:34-38, I found the quote and looked at the top of the page and it said Mathew 11, but 11 starts in the second collumn while 10 is still in the left, along with that quote.

Thank you, Joe Shmoe, for such a great question! People have this concept that Christ came to this world simply to bring peace and harmony, and that people would live without conflicts or disagreements. There are too many differences of opinion between people such that this concept could not be farther from the truth. Jesus came preaching a single gospel, a single message, such that any message preached other than His would be one we should be waring against. We are to believe and follow Him before any other human being. This is why He preached about causing separation between friends and family members. It is nothing personal against one person or another, it is simply about following the truth and doing the right thing.

to answer this correctly first we got to straighten out the question the correct chapter and verse is mat. 10:34-39. next it doesnt say for i have come to set a man against his father it says for i am come to set a man at variance against his father big difference.the meaning of the word variance in the greek dictionary is alienate, to make apart. you have to use the greek dictionary here cause the new testament was written in greek not english so to understand the words correctly you cant use an english dictonary to interperate greek words. i know the king james is written in english translated from greek but our english words dont always mean the same. now christ is speeking her of a seperation (variance) when one becomes a christian like it or not there is a certian life style that needs to come with it. now what im about to say alot of people dont like, thats fine, you asked a question and im givin an answer. you take a family of of lost people mom, dad, son, daughter and so on. now say dad gets saved the rest of his family is still lost they are still living as the world lives now dad steps up and says to son "son as long as you live in this house you are not to listen to marilyn manson music or no more R rated movies with sex, violence or whatever." no juniors not going to like it so right there is a division or seperation thats why it says a mans foes shall be they of his own household verse 36. verses 37 is merly a nother way of saying thou shalt have no other Gods before me the first commandment. he has to be first in your life if you dont like that i cant help it its what the bible says. now the last one verse 38 think about the rich man in luke 18:22-25 the rich man was askin jesus about how to gain salvation and jesus told him to yet lackest thou one thing sell all that thou hast and distributeunto the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heave and come follow me. the rich man couldnt do it he loved his money, depended upon it, and cherished it more than what jesus had to offer him eternal life. once again we see the 1st commandment no other gods before him that money and wealth was also the rich mans god a god can be anything you put before God. you skip church cause you want to watch a tv show then you put that before God so if you cant do these things are not worthy of him once again the true and i emphasize true christian lifestyle does require a change in the way you live your life dont argue me argue the bible read it your self and see if it says different

Yes so sad. WE Muslims BELIEVE THAT JESUS CAME TO SPREAD PEACE.. I.E. ISLAM
thats why we dont consider these portions to be the word of God or Jesus. thats interpolation and lie on Jesus.
peace be upon him
he was man of noble mission and came to spread peace and brang people to worship one God
QURAN (5:75) "Christ the son of Mary was no more than an Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their (daily) food. See how Allah doth make His signs clear to them; yet see in what ways they are deluded away from the truth!"

During the WW11 some people turned in family members who were christians. This has happened in communistic countries who restrict religion. Freedom of religion is not earth wide.
the bible was written for everyone. Besides it is not over yet.
The bible also says the wicked will be destroyed and the meek will inherit the earth. One day a christian may have to die for his faith in every country we will all be tested. Matthew 24: Says like the days of Noah it will come upon us suddenly and then its over.
Wicked people will be history.

I believe this is referring to the fact that Jesus brought with him news that turned everything upside-down. He was ending the Jewish law of moses which people held so firmly onto. So people would be torn between believing in the new and old law, and they were, and people would tear from their households because of it, and they did. There had to be a seperation from old to new.
Look at these verses that come before,
17"Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. ...."Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
So you see, he is saying that people will reject the truth that jesus brings and turn on each other, that is the "war" I believe he is referring to. Also remember that at this point he is directly talking to his twelve disciples, and giving them specific directions for around the time of his death

It makes me say to myself " wow God wants me to learn to respect only truth" .... also try looking up Isaiah 45:7, sir. it might also help you as you work your way through scripture. If you believe at all in good and evil.. it might help you also to look up Matthew 19:17 and John 10:11. God states in scriptures that His children know His Voice. Those who wonder Who is this God everyone seems to be so passionate for and against about .... are His children. Those who stand lukewarm at the side are fence straddlers and will have problems later on when they least want them.
Evil is finite. Goodness goes on forever.

it's because of the ppl that will turn against us when we follow Christ. Have you not noticed all the Christian Bashing that goes on...? Try preaching the Word to a Non-believer they usually react in a hateful way at first. This doesn't mean that ppl you preach to will not become Christians My whole family hated to see me come around for a while then one by one they all got saved and became Christians.

It is true that Christ came to bring peace, peace between the believer and God and peace among men. The inevitable result of Christ's coming is conflict(between Christ and the anti-christ, light and darkness or Christ's children and the devil's children). This conflict can occur between members of the same family.
