In English is spelled Turkey. Turks do not like that (because of the meaning it has in English) and try to promote the Turkish spelling which is Turkiye and they are right. So I bet you are Turkish and you know more than me.

Nevertheless. It is situated in Minor Asia and its present capital is Ankara (which in Greek means anchor since it is a Greek word). Its former capital was Istanbul (which in old Greek means In/To the city). It is the successor of the Ottoman Empire. The most important man in Turkish history is Mustafa Kemal Ataturk a truly visionary man who established the modern Turkish state and made it a secular republic. He was a Turkish born in Salonika which is situated in Greece and his house is the Turkish concolet in that city.

It has a population of 70 million people. 99% of them are Muslims 80% Turkish and 20% Kurdish.

Turkey is developing very fast and has applied to become an EU member but its final succession to the EU it will take more than 10 years. The richest areas are at the coastline. There is much debate inside the country about its Muslim heritage and the secular character of the state but most of the people are in favour of the secular character of the country.

It is a very good destination for tourists and has many places to visit. A relatively cheap destination because of the weak currency. The tourist can visit ancient Greek (even though according to the Turks all of them are Roman), ancient Roman, Byzantine and Muslim sites.

The most beautifull cities according to my opinion are Ismir and Istanbul. For Christians it is realy interesting to visit Agia Sofia in Instabul, a 1500 year old Byzantine Church which was turned to a Mosque and now to a museum. Also the Greek Orthodox Patriarch or Ecumenical Patriarch is situated in Instabul (It is the same as the Pope for the Orthodox Christians). SultanAhmet (Blue) Mosque is realy impresive. There is also the Topkapi Palace and many other thigs to see.

Other intresting sites are the ancient Troy, ancient Ephesus, Bodrum, Cheshme, Kusadasi and many others

Merhaba arkadaş
