Because traditionally a Sunday is supposed to be the day off rest, and shops never really opened on a Sunday in England untill the early 90's!Plus fish and chip shop owners assume that nobody would want a takeaway on a Sunday anyway as traditionally people have a roast on a Sunday!

well it should be fairly easy for you to make your own chips and fried fish if you have a deep saucepan, a fair quantity of (reusable) oil and the other raw ingredients to hand. its not rocket science.
(well ok, cooking chips actually is, but if a dunderhead like me can pick it up, so can anyone)

and though i can't understand this craving for a pickled egg (bleurgh) you could approximate it by hard boiling an egg, cutting it in half and soaking in a bowl of spirit vinegar while you cook the other things, and sticking it back together again to serve

the all-night garages will still be open after all, particularly try the tesco express ones, even if the chippies aren't.
this is also the real reason most indian and chinese takeaways offer an "english" section on their menu - for chip starved cholesterol-heads fresh from the pub on a sunday eve

give me a pizza any day though... perfect drunk food.

There used to be a bye law that forbid the sale of fish on Sundays. But I think that the probable answer to your question is in most area's of the UK today these shops do open on Sundays, but unfortunately not in your neck of the woods.

It's the law and dates back to 1598 when King Henry 8th said that all fish and chip shop workers deserve a holiday on the Sabbath.

It's all down to shop owner which day (or part of) they are shut. Some of the ones round here are closed all day Monday and a half day later in the week.

Did you get your pickled egg. I have them quite often and always with a gherkin - not the building if you're in London!). Yummy.

Is it not something to do with Chinese religion, as most of the chip shops round my way are run by Chinese families?
