i personally would hate to be the one that thinks he does not have to give account of his actions to anyone..i know there are people out there like that.. i really find it hard these days to know a real christian..i think we should really strive to do gods word.. i am not innocent myself and i have done many wrongs in my life.. i have asked god to forgive me and i am trying to do better than i did in my earlier years.. i was raised as a baptist ministers daughter and i went against the way i was taught.. i did not have any street smarts at all and i have really paid the hard way for some of the decisions i have made in life...i believe in the lord and really always have, but i was around the wrong kind of people and it is easy to do wrong when you are drinking and associating with people of the world.. i do not do those things anymore.. i have a lot of damage for the years i spent in the world by abusive husbands ....and i have learned a lot through my experiences though..i think a relationship with god is really the most wonderful feeling.. to know you have someone you can pray to, read his word and really get involved and it seems that god can make you happy and help you through some difficult times...i believe god knows our hearts and why i did some of the things i did.. at one point in life i just wanted to die...but i thank you for the question and i wish i could explain better how i feel now... but god is just to forgive us of our sins if we turn away from that life and ask him to forgive us.. and then try and to live a moral live, ...i have always been such a forgiving and loving , giving person...and i have been hurt alot... but i have made it through and now i try to just stay away from some people.. the devil has followers too, and they come to kill , steal ,destroy...and the devil is lose in this world today...but i want to on judgement day be one that the lord excepts into the kingdom of god.. john 3:16 says, whosoever believeth in me shall have eternal life... and one thing we must remember there is none good or perfect in this world , we have all come short of the glory of god.. but since jesus died on the cross for our sins, we can obtain through the mercy of gods loving grace we can see the kingdom of god...

Both of these men need to be judged solely on the content of their character and the goodness of their actions. Don't they say that 'actions are stronger than words'?

People who do not believe in God are still accountable to others. The difference is that we accept this accountability as a noble and worthy responsibility.

Deuteronomy 6:24
The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.

Deuteronomy 10:12-13
And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?

Ecclesiastes 8:13
Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.

Believe it or not, people with no belief in God can still lead normal, productive, law-abiding lives. I have no real belief in God one way or the other and I've never even had a speeding ticket.

I donate time and money to charity. I help my fellow man at every opportunity. I love my family and my dog. I'm a citzen.

Belief in God (or lack thereof) has no bearing whatsoever on how a person leads their life.

Optimistically looking at your question - the first man thinks he will meet god and is doing action to re-compensate. The second man has already realized GOD within and he know he does not have to give an account to anyone but his own self, his own consciousness, and is thus GOD LOVING, NOT God Fearing.

The fear of God makes people accountable for their actions. If you are afraid of being judged you will not murder, rape or commit crimes against others. If you feel there is no consequence for your actions after death, you can have free reign and not feel responsible. i think having the fear of God helps because you know that it you are going to be judged you will think twice about your actions. I know I always do!

You assume that atheists believe that they have to account to no one. This is simply untrue. You have to account to your own ethical standards, to your family and friends, to humanity, and to the law. I've known many atheists for many years. All of them are fine people who care deeply about human beings and the welfare of animals.
It is unnecessary to postulate a punishing God who will throw sinners into hell if they don't follow his commands. People need postitive reasons to be good, not negative reasons. It's also no good to put the reward for good behavior off into the next world. There is plenty of satisfaction in doing good things here; caring for a sick person and watching that person improve under your care is a very satisfying thing. As the Victorians liked to say, "Virtue is its own reward."

And both of them are good men. One is good because he fears some bad consequences, the other is good because he genuinely cares about making the world a better place. Why do you think everybody has to have a reward for being good just because you have to?

"And if god exists, merely because it created us does no longer unavoidably recommend that it has the right to set moral criteria, it may well be argued: morals are merely a training guide for commonly used habit in society." you're proper, yet you also could keep in mind that in the bible it says that God gave his "little ones" loose will to do undesirable and reliable yet from the seems of it...yea particularly a lot whoever human beings "believe" that's regulations by ability of outrage...with out question! concern is one of our maximum effective thoughts....it may get someone to do just about some thing...

I don't do what I do because I am afraid of God. I chose my actions based on what I rfeel is rightr as a person. I am Catholic and it bothers me that the church trys to scare people into acting a certain way and going to church. You shouldn't have to be forced into doing the right thing...
