First off, wasn't that Moon deity a Goddess??? Was the Angel Gabriel moonlighting (good pun, huh?) when he spoke to Mohammad?

Not all faiths associate the moon with a female deity. That is a very European idea. The Middle East is a very different place. Secondly, there was no elevation involved, what he did was get rid of the other Gods and kept just one. This has happened many times throughout history, including Christian history, as their God was once a sky God, similar to Zeus and Odin. He was the patron God of their tribe, as Allah was the patron of Muhammad's tribe. When the Christian God said, "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me." he was saying, "Listen, I'm your tribal God, and you'd better give me #1 priority." This is taken out of context today by people who have no sense of human history.

Like the Greek Hestia first and last, certainly didn't mean ONLY, did it?

At any rate, you can't go in and destroy all the Gods and say "Hey look, worship this new random guy instead." You have to give people a name they recognize.

Now I am not Islam bashing, these are just the facts. I lived in a Muslim society for 2 years and they were the most hospitably people I have ever met.

Muhammed was an illiterate (could not read nor write) caravan leader raised by his uncle. His mother and father both died. He was conceived by his parents and not of a virgin birth. He was later possessed by demonic influences.

He even believed this himself and when he stated he felt a huge pressure and fear overcome him and commanded he recite. He believed and stated he was possessed and went to others asking for help.

He was later convinced it was Gabriel who had come to him and gave him all his revelations. Other key factors in this religion would be that Muhammad was a member of the Quraysh tribe. What does this have to do with anything? Arabia was a polytheistic religion meaning they had many gods. The god of his tribe was Allah the moon god. Thus the symbol of the moon and the star.

After he had defeated the people of Mecca he destroyed all of the statues of the gods except that of the moon god. The moon god was named Aglibol in Arabic, Suen in Akkadian, and Nanna in Sumerian.

Traditionally in religions descended from Ancient Sumer the moon god is male. (The ancient Arabians had gotten their religion probably by way of the Assyrians, but little is known exactly how the Arabians came to worship a derivation of the Sumerian pantheon.)

The Arabians were worshiping these gods as early as the first century BCE, and continued to worship them to the seventh century when they were defeated by the forces of Mohammed.

As for Gabriel, he would have been well known to Mohammed. Being a simple merchant he would have had a lot of contact with the christians and the Jews of his area.

How come you're on this God stuff all the time ? No matter what anyone says about the Gods, arguements will go on and on and on forever. Nothing can be proven. The little bit that anyone can talk about is from a couple of books written many years ago. You can hold a copy of each of the holy books of the world's religions in one hand, but if all the preaching about them was written in books, they would fill the Grand Canyon.

oh brother ! oh brother ! oh brother.

Allah is NOT a moon god. Moon is the creation of God. Allah is another name of God.

Quran proves - "Allah" is NOT a 'moon god':

"And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not bow down (prostrate) to the sun nor to the moon, but only bow down (prostrate) to "Allah" Who created them, if you (really) worship Him." [Quran 41:37]

The Qur'ân answers this question before you asked it. Read this verse:

They ask you about the new moons. Say: These are signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind and for the pilgrimage (Qur'ân 2:189).

The word "Allah" literally means itself, "The only one worthy to be worshipped".

"Say: ‘Call upon Allah, or call upon Rahman: by whatever name ye call upon Him, (it is well): for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names....‘"
[Al-Qur’an 17:110]

Allah is not in His creation.

i'm a moslem. i'm no longer going to say some thing adverse to you because like some thing else of non moslems, you do not realize what Islam quite is. There are continuously violence in each faith. Crimes develop into salvation in the call of religion. Jews killed Jesus, Christians wiped out Jews (undergo in thoughts nazi, huh?). yet there are also honest those who quite stay their lives as a competent believer. and that i position self belief in those human beings so i understand that this international continues to be a captivating position. undergo in thoughts, faith is the believe you stay in, no longer of what you renowned. Peace be with you...

Many look for a light in the darkness. Better a dim light, than no light. Islam waits for the Return, as other religions. The Sun also rises.

Is that cryptic, or what? Ooohhh...goose bumps...must pinch myself!
