one for illegal immigrants?
My personal experience has seen a person who has no ID, no proof of insurance, no current car registration, speaks little English; crash into a fence and leave the scene without saying anything to property owner after doing approx $1,000 worth of damage to the fence. When the owner, by chance found the culprit, he admitted the wrong doing to the police but couldn't/ wouldn't pay for the damage. The police say they can't do anything. The insurance co says that to process the claim for the damage would make it neccessary to raise their premiums. What would happen if YOU had been the "fence breaker"? Jail? Civil suit for damages? Car being impounded for no reg? Being imprisoned for hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident?
Is this fair ... or is it a double standard?

This is a true story. Informally, the ins. agent "mentioned" the rate increase as "what would happen" if a claim over the deductable was filed (it's not legal for an agent to say this, by the way!) This kind of problem is SO rampant in our society right now, that the system is breaking down with getting claims made and paid. Compliments of Illegal immigration.
The owner of the property has been put in the position of having to write a letter to the head cop, to get anything more done. Yes, to call INS (who was that fence breaker anyway? No ID!)
Please note those of you who brought up "Mexico and or Mexicans" No where in this question was "the M word" mentioned by me.

So true. My sister's car was totaled by a hit and run illegal. They are everywhere here.
Ins. rates will go up as well as taxes to cover their school and health costs. It's disgusting.

Yes, there is a double standard. There are citizens and there are non-citizens. That doens't mean anyone is better than another, but there are rights inherent in being a citizen of ANY country when you're in that country.
The story doesn't really hold up well - if the person driving into the fence had no license, they would be issued at least a ticket, and with no papers, a call to INS. In Texas, with no insurance, the car would be impounded as well. And the insurance company won't warn you about raising premiums for a claim until AFTER you've made it, not before. What they will tell you is that your deductible may be the same amount as the damage and not worth going through them.
And just an FYI, if the fence-breaker were an American in Mexico, they would be in jail right off because they are not a citizen of Mexico.

No, there is no double standard. What do you want the police to do? I think they can only right a ticket if they arrive to the scene of an accident. Being called later and told "I know who did it" isn't enough evidence for the police to write the person a ticket or arrest the person. The police enforce the laws, they do not convict law breakers.
The person who incurred damages can still take the driver to court if they are unwilling to reconcile. If the driver had insurance but just didn't give that info to the property owner, that will come out in court. The driver would make the ins claim and the prop owner wouldn't see rate increases because no claim was filed under their ins.
I don't see a double standard in this instance...the property owner has just as many options dealing with the illegal immigrant as with a legal immigrant or US citizen. The only difference is that the illegal immigrant isn't adhering to yet another law in America...they aren't working with the person they've caused harm to. They would not be a good person to have in our country and would not be deserving of amnesty.

Yes there is a double standard not only for illegal immigrants but also for politicians We had a city judge a few years back that hit 6 parked cars while drunk and left the scene . He got off with a $400 ticket for reckless driving . If it would have been you or I they would have thrown the book at us.

I know a crackhead who has no ID, a beat up car she uses to score, no car reg (in fact I think it says 2004), definately no insurance and would leave the scene of ANY accident not to get locked up. I also know a 16 year old who doesn't have a license, not on his Daddy's insurance and fled as well. I know a single mom who only buys auto insurance when her car needs to be registered and would leave in a heartbeat........she CAN'T afford it.
Oh they are all Americans.......stop using this rhetoric......it is silly and useless. I like it better when you give me something that makes me say "hmmmmm".
Peace

No.
There is one CONSTITUTION for Americans, and a better one for them.
That has to stop now. You thought the 60's riots were bad, wait until America wakes up.
The only persons immune from prosecution under our system are pollitical diplomats from other countries.
Are illegal colonizers political diplomats from Mexico?
I don't think so.
