I'm thinking along the lines of a mid-size sedan or a mini suv.

I'm a MAJOR fan of Toyotas. By the time the motor finally goes, you'll have a Jeep! (Meaning, the body will rust out before the motor will go). They are pretty easy to keep up with maintenance-wise. The only downside to foreign cars is that when something goes, it goes ka-boom. Regardless, I still favor Toyotas, but any Japanese-made car is good.

The Ford Escape is a cute SUV, but I can't get past the "Ford" portion of it to be able to actually test drive one.

Different strokes for different folks. It's all up to you. All you can do is your research and go from there. You can start by checking out edmunds.com, where you can research and compare different cars. You'll also get advice on how to buy a car, a good price for said car, traps not to fall into, etc.

Little cars are dangerous. The smaller toyota and hondas
don't stand a chance against a heavier vehicles or in a serious accident. Mid-size sedans or an SUV is a good choice.
A few pennies saved for a gallon of gas is not worth your life.
Weight and mass is key in safety. I want to stick up for the domestics, try an American product at least.
Ford escape or a fusion.

Stay away from SUV's. The are inefficient and not as safe as cars. And the whole point of an SUV (either for towing or cargo capacity) is lost when you go to a mini-SUV.
How much are you willing to spend?
Toyotas and Honda are always good buys.
But a new midsize car that seems to be the best value for the money is the Mercury Milan or its Ford twin the Fusion.
Saturn has also came out with a new midsize car that has 250+ HP for aound 20k. There are alot of chioces out there just depending on what you are actually looking for.
